Rick Santorum praises 'hardliner' Tony Abbott, says US conservatives could learn lessons from him

You know it's bad when this nut likes you.

A former United States Republican presidential candidate says his party could learn lessons from Tony Abbott's election victory.

Former senator Rick Santorum says Mr Abbott was able to win government while sticking to his right-wing Catholic principles.

Well, what else could be reasonably expected from the originator of the Santorum Amendment?
The Santorum Amendment was a failed proposed amendment to the 2001 education funding bill (which became known as the No Child Left Behind Act), proposed by Republican Rick Santorum (who was at that time the United States Senator for Pennsylvania), which promoted the teaching of intelligent design while questioning the academic standing of evolution in U.S. public schools. In response, a coalition of 96 scientific and educational organizations wrote a letter to the conference committee, urging that the amendment be stricken from the final bill, arguing that evolution is, in the scientific fields, regarded as fact and that the amendment creates the mis-perception that evolution is not fully accepted in the scientific community, and thus weakens science curricula. The words of the amendment survive in modified form in the Bill's Conference Report and do not carry the weight of law. As one of the Discovery Institute intelligent design campaigns it became a cornerstone in the intelligent design movement's "Teach the Controversy" campaign.
...
One result of this briefing was that in 2001 Senator Santorum proposed incorporating pro-intelligent design language, crafted in part by the Discovery Institute's Center for Science and Culture, into the No Child Left Behind bill.[1] It portrayed evolution as generating "much continuing controversy" and not widely accepted, using the Discovery Institute's Teach The Controversy method.
Lobbyists were involved in drafting proposed laws???

The Abbott government has quietly reopened a visa loophole that will allow employers to hire an unlimited number of foreign workers under temporary working visas, in a move that unions say will return widespread rorting of the system.
As part of a Coalition bid to remove ''red tape'' from the 457 skilled migrant visa regulations, employers will not be penalised or scrutinised if they hire more foreign staff than they applied for.

An insightful article from Fairfax economics journalist Michael Pascoe -

Please Mr Abbott, stick to the facts

There's a 1960s quote attributed to former US Senator and Ambassador Daniel Moynihan that's increasingly apt half a century later: "You're entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts." It's a truth that seems to be lost on the political class, from the Prime Minister down.

The danger of forgetting that truth was on display as Tony Abbott struggled to justify his decision to flick Treasury Secretary Martin Parkinson – contrary to the advice of John Howard, Peter Costello and just about anyone who has bothered to listen to what Parkinson says.

...

EDIT: Here is the link to the full version of the excellent interview Ken Henry gave on 7.30 the other night (referred to in the Pascoe article).

Refreshing to see someone who knows their stuff and tells it straight!

It's a little thing, but I loved the bit from ~14 minutes for about a minute and a half afterwards, when he was asked what he thought about the ETS and Ross Garnaut's climate-change-remediation cost-to-the-economy calculations! Completely and beautifully blunt, in a 'Yes, Prime Minister' sort of way.

amazing isnt it, why just months ago the Abbott government was saying how many cuts to the budget were needed to "save" Australia and just after 6 months of government Abbott has managed to get the budget so under control that he can spend $14 billion on fighter jets..... COME ON PEOPLE not just anyone can save a country from a "budget emergency" and then be able to spend$14 billion on war machines
