Default BEER: Hate IPAs? You might be a supertaster.

Disclaimer: TEVW is a supertaster (I've double-blind tested), and it must be a pain in the bum to have such a sensitivity.

Many people love knocking back a few hop-tastic brews like Indian Pale Ales after a long week, but not supertasters. In fact, they can barely stand the taste of beer at all. If that sounds familiar, you might be a supertaster yourself.

According to Dr. Robert DeSalle, curator of entomology in the Sackler Institute for Comparative Genomics at the American Museum of Natural History, people fall into three major categories of tasters: nontasters comprise about 25 per cent of the population; normal tasters are roughly half the population; and supertasters make up the last 25 per cent.

These supertasters experience all tastes far more intensely than others, and the effects of different tastes are amplified for them, DeSalle explains at Nautilus. If something is kind of sweet, for example, it will be very sweet for a supertaster.

That means bitter drinks like beer, especially IPAs, are extremely bitter to the supertasting population. The intense flavour of the hops and taste of the alcohol is too much to handle.
More, including linky to a test, at source.

I'm not a supertaster. I like beers, including some IPAs.

Mind you, I smoked for 18 years, so I'm lucky to taste anything at all.

    Can't handle coriander leaf though.

I can taste plastic. I suspect that I'm also a supertaster.

I did a PTC test to check (it was bitter for me) as I've never been able tolerate vegetables in the evil Brassica genus.

Not tried it with beer though.

Never could stand beer, I've learned to drink cider, but only when I'm in the mood. More than one is blech. If it's flavoured, like rum and cola it's better. Can't drink tea unless it's mostly soy milk as it seems to take the bitter away. Only recently been drinking tea because of chai , been trying to adapt for years because tea is healthy.
I'm probably a supertaster, but couldn't be bothered with the testing.
