Thread: Gods that RIP

    Default Gods that RIP

One of The Irreverent Mr Black's posts recently had a pitcure in it which shows Jesus with some other gods. The caption said 'Don't worry, he's gone to the farm, to play with all the other gods'.

And that got me thinking - Who are these other gods? Do they still 'exist'?

Then I thought, it'd be great to have a list of all the gods that now 'rest in peace' (RIP) so that we can see how many gods have been put out of business (eg - because of a scientific discovery).

I reckon the first candidate should be 'Apollo' who was the 'Sun God'.

Can anyone else think of any other Gods that RIP?

(Looks like Apollo was also the god of light, truth, prophecy, archery, medicine, healing, music, poetry, and the arts and other stuff as well).

Actually there is a list. H.L Mencken wrote a piece entitled "Memorial Service". He asks where the graveyard of the dead gods is. He then lists the dead gods. I counted 140 and stopped. I'm sure it is not definitive but it's fun to read.

According to the great prophet Tom Holt, they aren't dead. They are living in a retirement village owned by Odin, conveniently located on a supernatural bus route.

    Wow.

Thnx everyone (and thnx Protium for not permanently breaking the forum)

I thought there'd be a few of them, but I had no idea there was that many. That Mencken guy is an interesting person. Not exactly my cup of tea, but still interesting. And in his article I had to have a laugh at the following:

"Tezcatilpoca was almost as powerful; he consumed 25,000 virgins a year".

On that graveyard website, I also found the following...

Australian: 93 Gods, Goddesses and Places in the Dreamtime
Alinga, Anjea, Apunga, Arahuta, Ariki, Arohirohi, Bamapana, Banaitja, Bara, Barraiya, Biame, Bila, Boaliri, Bobbi-bobbi, Bunbulama, Bunjil, Cunnembeille, Daramulum, Dilga, Djanggawul Sisters, Eingana, Erathipa, Gidja , Gnowee, Haumia, Hine Titama, Ingridi, Julana, Julunggul, Junkgowa, Karora, Kunapipi-Kalwadi-Kadjara, Lia, Madalait, Makara, Nabudi, Palpinkalare, Papa, Rangi, Rongo, Tane, Tangaroa, Tawhiri-ma-tea, Tomituka, Tu, Ungamilia, Walo, Waramurungundi, Wati Kutjarra, Wawalag Sisters, Wuluwaid, Wuragag, Wuriupranili, Wurrunna, Yhi

    See http://www.graveyardofthegods.org/de...istofgods.html

I often forget about Australia when it comes to gods that RIP, but there you go.

BTW - I don't know who Tom Holt is but I'll Google him and do some more reading. There's so much information out there, joining this forum has been a great learning curve.

I liked American Gods. I also like Pratchett's Small Gods, though he doesn't use the gods of human mythology, his various jibes at current religious trends are pretty transparent.

According to the late great Douglas Adams none of them are dead as their followers required them to be immortal.
