That would have to be some seriously hot chillies.
Unfortunately for Geoff, he has the only forum name I know offhand with the "mane" in it to make the joke!
Oi, Doggo! Weapons-grade chilli research is my shtick.

If we go back to the beginnings of things, we shall always find that ignorance and fear created the gods; that imagination, rapture and deception embellished them; that weakness worships them; that custom spares them; and that tyranny favours them in order to profit from the blindness of men. I find it hard to believe that I am the only one that was enthralled by this achievement, a speed record that has stood for 50 years and will more than likely remain for quite some time..
    It's name was the X?

I’m enthralled, but I don’t know the answer.

As it probably wasn’t the first X-plane, and I don’t know how many there were, I’ll start the “bidding” at X-5.

X5 is in the correct direction but they did not make a linear progression so there may have been 13 designs that got no further than the drawing board.
The first was the X-1 the final version was the X-?

I just did a google search on the X series and there were intervening designs some of which were just rockets others obviously failed to live up to expectations so very little is known about them. The jump from X-1 to X-?5 was pretty swift and the X=?5 had an operational lifetime of almost 10 years.
    Fascinating reading in my opinion.

You are correct MikeJay, the X-15 was an awesome piece of machinery well worth the read if you are into speed and engineering.
