    Default Greetings from the west

Morning all (it's still morning here),

Figured I should introduce myself. I'm a geologist/university lecturer transplanted to Perth for work. There's worse places to be.

Came out as an atheist a couple of decades ago. Never thought my family was particularly religious until I suddenly came out with "I don't believe in God" and got in trouble for arguing with a teacher at school over creationism. I was 10. My parents thought it was my teen rebellion starting early and it would be a phase I'd grow out of. 20 years later...Must be a pretty long phase

Anyway, look forward to chatting with some like minded individuals on here!

    Hi Quark

This is a message sent to all who find their way to these forums.

Enjoy the forums. We hope to see plenty from you in discussions.

    Welcome Quark. What's your flavour?

What, indeed, is an atheist? He is one who destroys delusions which are harmful to humanity in order to lead men back to nature, to reality, to reason. Baron d'Holbach

    _____

If we go back to the beginnings of things, we shall always find that ignorance and fear created the gods; that imagination, rapture and deception embellished them; that weakness worships them; that custom spares them; and that tyranny favours them in order to profit from the blindness of men. Hi Quark!

    Gawd, another rock hound!
Now don't you go upsetting those nice creationists folks and taking away their Flud fantasies, ya hear?
Just stick to the idea that science tests falsifiable hypotheses to destruction.

    Oh, don't even start

Ever had to teach a 1st year undergrad geology class where you've got kids arguing that the earth is only 6000 years old and you suggesting otherwise is disrespecting their religious beliefs?

Doesn't happen often, but it's happened.

At least to doesn't happen too often! I am at university now studying urban and regional planning. What amazes me (I guess I should not be surprised) is that I can go through the whole of my course without learning much about science.

Considering that when I get out into this "real world" I have heard so much about, I will have to make real life planning decision that take into account things like health and climate change. The fact that many of my peers will be going out without the knowledge that I happened to stumble across though podcasts, books and the internet is sort of scary!

So at least your student are learning a bit about science and the scientific method!
