Iridescence

Hi there! I am new to this forum and decided it was time to stop lurking and actually come and say hello. I have been an atheist my entire life, religion just wasn't part of my childhood, aside from a brief period of spiritual exploration in my early 20's when I read a lot of books, including the old testament - I'd well and truly had enough by the time I got to the NT - and leant a little towards wicca until I realised that if I couldn't believe in the christian god, I couldn't believe in any of the wiccan, greek, roman, or any other kind of god and that is when I fully realised my atheism.

I once wanted to study theology at university level, however I have since moved onto other activities. I think that kids should be taught about all religions, and also about atheism, and allowed to make up their own minds. I think religion has no place in schools (unless as above) or government, and I worry that the religious sects of this world will eventually blow each other, and the rest of us, up, if something is not done to curb the madness.

Anyway, that's me! Aside from that, I am 35, adore my husband, uhh.. an artist, and working for myself in the greatest job I can have :D

Oh and yes... I am human :p (that's for the first post moderation :D )

Welcome Iridescence! I tried out wicca too, and can understand the interest in theology... I have a perverse interest in the DETAILS even though I don't believe any of it! :)

Hope to see you around the forum.

Ah welcome!

Thumbs up for explaining both atheism and all religions, instead of just 1 sided.

Welcome, Iridescence. (My ex-mormon mother is wiccan. ) The one good thing about it is that when she dies, I get her extensive crystal collection. <I like crystals from a purely aesthetic perspective.>)

Hi and welcome Iridescence.
I love the way Eric Idle sings the words "expainding and expainding" in the universe song :D

Just remember that you're standing on a planet thats evolving,
Revolving at 900 miles an hour.
It's orbiting at 19 miles a second,
So it's reckoned,
A sun that is the source of all our power.

The sun and you and me and all the stars that we can see,
Are moving at a million miles a day,
In an outer spiral arm, at 40,000 miles an hour,
Of a galaxy we call the Milky Way.

Our galaxy itself contains 100 billion stars,
It's 100,000 light years side to side,
It bulges in the middle, 16,000 light years thick,
But out by us it's just 3,000 light years wide.

We're 30,000 light years from galactic central point,
We go around every 200 million years,
And our galaxy is only one of millions of billions,
In this amazing and expanding universe..."

And our galaxy is only one of millions of billions,
In this amazing and expanding universe...

The universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding
in all of the directions it can whiz,
as fast as it can go, the speed of light, y'know,
twelve million miles a minute, and that's the fastest speed there is,
So remember when you're feeling very small and insecure
How amazingly unlikely is your birth,
And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space,
'Cause there's bugger-all down here on Earth."

And for those of you who like to butcher songs on guitar(or any other instrument for that matter :p) like me here are the chords.

Nice one Iridescence and of course you Davo :D

Welcome, welcome, welcome.

I haven't been here that long myself - but I already feel enough a part of the community to welcome new members. Enjoy.
