Mod Note: Parent Thread (http://www.atheistfoundation.org.au/forums/showthread.php?t=8801) was about the discovery that transcranial magnetic stimulation could alter a subject's moral perception. NOW READ ON...

I sometimes wonder about whether or not these scientific discoveries are really a good idea. I mean think of the potential issues with this; people can go around with magnets and recruit unsuspecting individuals in their tirade of mass terrorism or something. In particular, the religious extremists.

On the other hand, it may make the "If your god asked you to kill someone..." question easier to answer. And this does prove once in for all morals do NOT come from religion.

Maybe one day this might lead to a technique to turn it ON in people. I know a couple of people that could seriously use a dose of "human" applied to the mind.

I bet you a dollar the military is interested in this. The last thing that they want is when the order comes down to push the "let's end the world" button (aka, start thermonuclear war), is for people to actually question the order.

Ha ha...but what if god is just a great big magnetic field! :D :D

Ha ha...but what if god is just a great big magnetic field! :D :DThen I will build myself a ginormous electromagnet and hook it up to a large generator or tap into the nearest power plant. :)

@ Mr Black.

So basically scientists have proven heavily religious people have magnets in ther heads?

Maybe their brains are more susceptible to the Earths magnetic field. :D

Or maybe immoral religious nutters are into using magnetic therapy (http://www.dickwicks.com.au/):

@BlueDevil: Yes maybe so.

@Black: At least Blue got my joke. Also, it was a very interesting read. They also have brain pacemakers which re-route electrical signals in the brain. The result of this is a change of mood. Depressed to Manic at the flick of a switch.

PNAS is the journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Pretty sure it is among the top 5 journals of the US from memory (regarding citations)
The authors are from Havard and MIT.

Maybe i am missing something?

Aww, cmon. It was begging to be acknowledged. I refuse to believe it isn't a running joke in the world of journals!

Do mobile phones still have magnets in them?

Do mobile phones still have magnets in them?

Yes, that is why you get thoughtless arseholes who use them whilst driving, in the cinema and whilst being served at the checkout.

Sent from my iPhone using magic technology thingy application thingy.

I got a small 30mm rare earth magnet in a small iron keeper. I occasionally hold it up to my head when I am bored, and I still don't feel like killing anybody just for their money, and I still don't feel like worshipping zombies. What am I doing wrong?

@Mjt (with my joking mode =ON): the magnetic field of the mobile phone specifically targets the parts of the brain used in driving safely, disabling them.

If you wish to see evidence, look at drivers with mobes clapped to their heads.
I think if I remember basic a&p that is the same part of the brain used to govern manners when dining out yeah? I am really surprised at how effective the magnetic field is at turning this part of the brain off. The effects are almost instant;)

@ Mr. Black

You would not believe how many tools I almost run over with my bicycle everyday because they are so busy listening to their iPod/talking on their phone that they are deaf to the sound of me ringing my bell and yelling obscenties at them like, "Get out of the fucking bike lane!"

Magnets? How the fuck do they work?

:D

irresponsible or deliberate actions that might have resulted in harm were seen as morally acceptable if the story had a 'happy ending'I guess overall that comes down to your interpretation of a "happy ending". A "happy ending" for many fundies would be one wat iz writed in their novel, regardless of the harm it might cause.

It could be the "happy ending" that occurs at the end of massages, for an extra 50 bucks.

I don't see a moral issue there...

I do wonder though... If they waved magnets around other areas of the brain would it relieve theists of their mental illness/es...
