Got a new laptop. It comes with Windows 7
Now it's preinstalled with a-la-crappe (I have to admit, first impressions are Windows 7 outperforms XP - but then again it is a quad dual-core CPU) and what not.
Now since I'm so used to Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP I am starting to feel like a n00b
Not a bad price: $1243 - Lenovo ThinkPad T410
I'll hope to transfer stuff soon from the old laptop to the new one; but to be honest I kind of like this old laptop. It's a shame that stuff had to stop working on the old one; LAN adapters, etc. And the processor ended up being too slow for my needs in the end.
Got 2GB of RAM, Windows 7 Professional and 320GB disk space. Intel Core i5 540M 460M :)
Oh and although I didn't order it, apparently they stuck Office 2010 on there.
And now I am REALLY inclined to use Mint on real hardware.

I love Windows 7. I have it on my home laptop, while my home desktop PC and work laptop have XP.
Give me 7 any day :)

Yea I have heard the same Aldaron .. my gf has 7 on her laptop, I have only used it a bit to troubleshoot issues she has had and mostly it is just familiarity that is my issue with it. Seems to perform well!
I'm jealous of the hardware mostly tho, specifically the CPU and most probably the other stuff the motherboard would give :) hehe

hehe - woops... wrong specs. :)
Actually it came with HT enabled, so I thought it was a quad-core when it was only a dual core. Still its a 2.53GHz CPU though.
I was fiddling around in the BIOS a bit and am quite confused why they want to allow flashing the BIOS over LAN connections.
I'm starting to get a little used to Windows 7 - albeit having to remove unnecessary garbage (will fiddle with OEM setup soon muahahahaha) and it is different from the last time I tried it, which was around Beta 1 or so.
Oh yes, and I'm lovin the task bar. :)

Another reason why I like Linux. It is so easy to disable unwanted services. On a windoze box it takes me ages, and I usually end up finking up something that I didn't want disabled.

Croc,
My computer was extremely old and I had it replaced by this "Forbin project" type monster. 2 x terra 16 gb ram Radeon 5970 graphics thingy robot like case with scary red lights,

Not too bad. 2 hard drives 1TB I interpret that?
As for the scary red lights, I have ome electroluminiscent wire which has been sitting there for almost a decade. Gotta use that for something. :)
Only reason I got this was because it was $1243 - strictly speaking I am not sure it is worth spending any more than $1500 for a laptop these days, unless you want to show off or have specific purposes.
This one be temporary - so I want things to be as cheap as possible until I can save up for something else; and besides this one is quite decent.

Shouldn't this be in Geek Speak?
Have fun with Win7 Croc. I'm about six months in and still doing occasional battle with the Office suite, particularly Word, which has been fiddled with terribly - so many common tasks hidden away now, so frustrating.
Another thing I love (not) is how it won't let you run programs that you have installed, even if you are the administrator. I have a program I use for work and I can't just open it to use it (if I do I get the "you do not have permission to open this program" message - WTF?) but if I right click the mouse and select "open as administrator, voila, I can use my program
It has many annoying features.
Anyway, enjoy your new toy. I'm sure you will :)

umm... it's not in Geek Speek? (I'm 95% sure I made this thread there initially. Something mysterious must have happened.)
I have to say this, but I think UAC is one hell of an improvement. It means I don't have to constantly use RUNAS when I want to change a setting or install something.

Praxis, I know what you mean about Word on 7. I have finally worked out how to effectively use it, but it is not very user friendly, darting back and forth in menus and on the toolbar. I miss Word XP.
I'm not fussed about 7 but it is better than Vista...

Bah! Screw word... OpenOffice.org FTW! :)
I must say, their "Impress" program is worse than MS Powerpoint however in terms of functionality.

I must say I agree with this statement.
I have been running win7 for a while now and have been enjoying the upgrades.
Oh Oh, have you found the resource manager? It's like task manager on steroids (try right clicking on the red processes, which means its stalled, and select Analyze Wait Chain).

I have indeed. I noticed that originally in 2007 when I was trying out Windows Server "Longhorn" - even does disk and network I/O stats.

Bit of an update for those who are interested.
Three days ago, I created recovery USB stick using their instructions. Fucked it up and it did not boot. Then attempted to uninstall all that fuckware they put on there. I fucked it up somehow and decided clean install from recovery must be good. Tried that. Fucked it up. Tells me "I can only have one copy of the Windows operating system" and shit when I try to recreate the recovery media.
Then next boot, corrupted winload.exe file.
Now I call Lenovo up and speak to a nice guy (who I suspect is from NZ - successfully resisted the urge to ask "Are you from New Zealand?") for recovery media, it came to me today. The discs contain 32-bit software only.
Not happy, I call them up again today (same guy suspected of being from NZ - successfully resisted the urge to ask "Wanna chup Bro?") and have to scan'n'send the invoice to them to prove that I had a 64-bit OS originally on there. So hopefully they send me 64-bit media this time.
Meanwhile, I decided to play around with Linux Mint. Performed an ATA enhanced secure erase using hdparm and installed Mint onto a JFS partition and made a separate JFS partition for my /home directory. Oh yes and there's 3.95GB swap space there.
So far, it's super easy to use and the installer is better than that of Windows operating systems.
So is the updater.
And the calculator.
In fact, it is very similar to Windows Vista's start menu. Definitely recommending it to anybody considering Linux distro.
(isn't it great to have people like The Irreverent Mr Black who knows all about this stuff?)
Oh yeah, and the only thing missing now is user account permissions (well there's file management permissions via ACL but...) and apparently any random joe can "send a message" via the logon screen when the system is locked. Fortunately like Windows this fantastic system locks it up when I am away from it for 5 minutes, which is what I like.
