View Full Version : Blasphemy day sept 30

"Blasphemy Day International is a campaign seeking to establish September 30th as a day to promote free speech and stand up in a show of solidarity for the freedom to mock and insult religion without fear of murder, violence, and reprisal. It is the obligation of the world's nations to safeguard dissent and the dissenters, not to side with the brutal interests of thugs who demand "respect" for their beliefs (i.e., immunity to being criticized or mocked or they threaten violence).
So if you support free speech, and the rights of those who disagree with religious views to voice their opinions peacefully, support our group and join the cause!"

To me, the natural world -- what little there is left, is sacred and [should be] inviolable; [ number 1 in your list]. For that reason I oppose the removal of laws regarding blasphemy... I want to prosecute for blasphemy all those who would destroy the patheticly small remnants of nature in the name of jobs and economic growth.

Elbert,
Good point although the protection of religion through blasphemy laws only strengthens their hold on the minds of believers and politicians by having a weapon against those who oppose them. These laws possibly need altering to exclude supernatural concepts to protect that which is actual and important to survival of the biosphere.
But I guess you mean that anyway. Very forward thinking of you.

Why don't you? ;) (I mean that in a 'look at the legal aspect of it') Currently there is only blasphemous libel under some state legislature (most noteably NSW)
Basically the laws aren't their for your opinion above, they are specificall religious in meaning, and that is a defining point in the law.
Blasphemy, in its narrow definition under English (and Australian) law, only applies to the Anglican Church, however due to section 116 of the Constitution it has not been tested within australia (tho there was cases pre-1900's I think where one bloke got charged). Justice Harper in the 'Pisschrist' case mentioned how the blasphemy law was a throwback to the English insitutionalised religion, and only protected christians against blasphemy no other religion.
while on the subject of pisschrist, a mates band is called that, we played with them in Belgium last year .. some vids I found on youtube of them too

Davo, I guess there's no such thing as bad publicity, so naming the band pisschrist is giving that fellow a bit of a boost dont you reckon?
My post was really tongue in cheek -- sort of taking the piss a bit, but thanks for your kind words, Jonathon.

Not really the band broke up after touring Europe last year, and like most all hardcore anarcho-punk bands, you don't make money from it, you make a living.
Indeed you can still buy their records, but my mate uploaded the full recordings for them to bittorrent, so you don't have to pay for them, and the band doesn't care one bit ;)

Davo, I tried a couple of the videos, but there must have been something wrong... all I heard was a bloke screaming accompanied by static and cheering and a wild cacophony of indistinguishable noise.
Can you explain what effect the noise is supposed to have on the listeners, and why they would submit to such a barrage of sound? and why an apparently sane and intelligent person such as yourself likes to be involved with this. I am not taking the piss, I am genuinely interested because the whole pop music scene is far more alien to me than devout religiosity could ever be.

lol :) no offence taken.
it's hard to record as it's live and the folk recording are just using camera's, you miss out on a lot of subtlety.
It's all about LIVE music.
Punk especially is about energy, creating energy and releasing it. The complexity of the music does not come across in the videos, there are 'layers' much as there is in classical music. There is also things like the drums going off-beat etc etc etc etc .. it's personal choice really, but LIVE ... wow!
I love the music basically because I can go sick in a circle pit and release all that energy from thinking and dealing with stuff, with others doing the same. There's a kinship and closeness in it. HOWEVER, I have problems with some of the 'commercial punk' followers and bands as they are just macho, you don't get girls in the pit for instance, and people don't pick you up if you fall down. The anarchist punk scene however is a totally different kettle of fish.
It's a social thing, kinda tribal, with massive amounts of energy built up over a night, and released in fun. love it. not just music, but energy. Usually there are stalls of DIY stuff, info shops etc etc and just generally awesome people that you can trust. You don't find that in a lot of the commercial type scenes, but the hardcore anarcho punk scene looks after it's own, an injury to one is an injury to all.
So music, energy, great down to earth people, DIY, top ideas with most people real thinkers .. love it all :)

Thanks, Davo, you sure have a way with words. what you say makes a lot of sense... we all need safe outlets for excess energy-- especially the young... I almost feel I've missed out on something exceptional. Too old to start now. the spirit might be willing but the flesh is far too weak... not to mention what it would do to my tinnitus!

yay! happy blasphemy day!
oo I might get me one of those shirts.
I DENY THE HOLY SPIRIT! (I already did the other day after watching The God who wasn't there, but in the name of blasphemy day I'll do it again!)
I also, for the record, deny any other form of spirits! (except of course those lovely liquid spirits derived from very real and tangible vegetable matter.)

What we need are a group of atheists to drive around in circles around the church - with the world's most religiously offensive bumper stickers and what not.
I should start off with this on the back of my motorcycle:

Love the concept - just a pity that 30/9 this year is a Thursday... I wonder if the sentiment carries over to the weekend following?;)

Wasn't it today in 2005 that the Danish cartoons appeared ? I wonder if that has got anything to do with this particular date being chosen for blasphemy day.

Why do all the pictures of Mohammed always show him with a dark beard. He was supposed to be old and should have a grey beard, like Santa Claus.
