OK have been playing around with this one but have not figured it out yet, most likely have to buy something for this to work but anyway I want to connect my stereo speakers to my laptop so that music from the laptop is playing through the stereo speakers. The stereo I have is a relic from the 80's but has great sound, wood framed speakers with in-built sub-woofers, speakers are connected with cables that have the open wires that have to be inserted into the sockets so they are not like regular plugs. Now I have an auxillary cable which can fit into the headphone socket on the laptop and have an adaptor which fits into the headphone socket on the stereo. I thought that would work but it hasn't so, any ideas on how I can get this to work?

Nevermind, I figured it out. Just had to run a rca cable from the back of the stereo into a pc subwoofer connected to the laptop. Problem solved!

@SD yep you got it, generally a 3.5mm stereo jack to 2 RCA for laptop to amplifier.

And most (if not all) lap top headphone/aux out.

Happy listening.
