I used to play Chaos with the old rules, years ago, massive wars that would last weeks setup in a room in a shared house.

The new rules are so much quicker and I think lost a lot of the in depth appeal of full on chaos-god-violence and hard core wargame it used to be, games workshop aimed for marketing at a younger crowd.

We used to make up whole army lists etc using the rules from Realm of Chaos, whole demon armies and associated stats.

Also had the band Bolt Thrower playing during games ;) sitting around getting pissed and fighting chaos armies is pretty cool :)

What kind?

I play a bit - largely an issue of time rather than anything else, and also split WH40K with warhammer fantasy battles, flames of war, and (eg) Axis and Allies board games.

Senexis also keen on 40K in the local American football off-season, and he organised a 40K campaign this year over about four months in which he and I, and a number of others played in weekly (I should add at this point the I was the only person to beat Senexis on equal points).

Re Davo's comments: I have to say I prefer more streamlined rulesets now I am older and a big more time pressed. When I was in my teens I was happy with the uber-detailed stuff but now I just want to throw down a fast-moving game in 2-3 hours.

I don't have any 40K photos but here's some WHFB stuff - the guy on a horse won a painting prize at a comp

Good choice - I didn't want to be telling you what to do, but that is by far the best and most efficient way into the game.

oh for sure I can understand that, I haven't played for years now for that reason I suppose, wouldn't have the time (or the space) to dedicate to the long gaming I used to do, but it was so satisfying the immense size of the armies we played, and the enormity of the battles (we even had GF's stuffed toys at one stage as gods on the battle field, and used all sorts of shit we found around the place as both scenery AND characters, that we would just work out stats for, sometimes they were really weird (like an oscar the grouch toy, had decent armour and would spew acidic vomit and assorted garbage that would have a random damage, or none at all)

We were in a shared house, setup a room and would sit around at night as we had no tv listening to music, drinking, making stuff for the game playing for an hour or two and could just let it sit till we came back to it :)

ahh great days ...

It's true - I rock the warhammerz. Fear my Guard, they will destroy you, wielding their flashlights in their t-shirts. They're almost as fearsome as my football team.

WAS, myself and one other bloke won all our games against the rest, and we rock-paper-scissored each other. Good times.

I owe you a rematch. I was keen on some Tau but you probably don't want to wait until 2012.

You can always use my Tau, once I get them back from George
