Hey all, I'm a friend of SinisterDexter and long time atheist. I'm what most would call a militant atheist. I'm far better in my arguments in person than in text but I'll try to make sense and lurk as little as possible. :)

Welcome. Love Firefly too. Hate the term militant atheists (unless someone has blown people up in the name of atheism). Can't wait to hear your views.

Thankyou all for the warm welcome. :)

Personally Kerri-Lee I dislike the term atheist as unneccesary, but we are the few. I'm more often described as a militant I should say because while I try not to bring it up I'll seldom let someone religious get away with something. This is not always the smartest thing to do however, and much of SinDex and mines conversations revolve around the right way to interact with theists that is both non-offensive but still relays a message powerful enough to not simply bounce off.

And yes, Firefly is awesome. The opinions and values Joss conveys is Mal resonate with me so he seems a good avatar.

Welcome Kojiro.

Mmmm the term Militant - kind of implies physical violence. I think the religious like to brand atheists, who have an opinion and are not afraid to make it public, "Militant" as some kind of pathetic defense and as a way to make us seem more like fundamentalists and to scare nice religious moderates away from contemplating atheism.

Unless you carry a gun (preferably a russian or chinese made automatic), wear a balaclava, fire off rounds into the air and call for the execution of all believers when someone dares to question atheism :p, I don't think any descriptor is necessary. Ya just got a sensible view of the world (but then that's quite scary to some religious people!!;)).
