The biggest personal struggle I have lately is to stop saying stupid little things like 'God only knows' 'God help me' and 'God no' as an answer to someone. I was raised in a loosely Christain environment and have picked these saying up from my family. 'God it's hard to stop' It's like saying 'bless you' to someone that has sneezed.
I might have to give myself an uppercut each time. Does anyone have a less painful solution?:(

I say things like that alot too. Sometimes, I change it to "dog" instead of "god".
However, it doesn't bother me if a "god no" or "oh my god" slips out, as many xians find this blasphemous, and I quite enjoy committing a bit of blasphemy.
I must admit that I do like to take the "lord's" name in vain. "Oh My F*cking G*d" and "J*sus F*cking Chr*st" are two of my faves.
If, however, for some reason J*sus is mentioned in an unblasphemous way, I refer to him as Jeebus, instantly making it blasphemous. :D
As for "bless you", I say "Gesundheit!" instead, which means "good health".

Good advice Vonnie. I think the one I'm trying to stop is 'God only knows' for obvious reason. Jeebus is good, thanks. When I was an innocent victim of Sunday School, I used to think they were talking about the Holy Goat. And I thought God's name was Harold i.e. Our Father.. Harold be your name...
Jeebus Christ I was a dumb kid. You'd fink I'd make the perfect Christian.

The hardest thing for me to lose has been the little sunday school songs that pop into my head on the odd occasion. Lately I've taken to try and change the lyrics so they don't make me want to vomit.
oh oh oh!!!! Just thought of a good one.
Jebus hates me, this I know.
For the Babble tells me so.
The sayings, like "Bless you" and "Thank the Lord" are really just habits, they need to be replaced with something else. Best and most effective if it is something funny like a different mythical/fantasy creature.
Praise the Toothfairy.
Thank Spock.
;)
Gesundheit is a good one for sneezes, as it is NOT German for God Bless You.
Feel your pain though, I really do. :)

Try doing things like saying "Jesus Fuckin' Christ!" whenever something annoys you and "Oh my fuckin' god!" (and anything else that can be considered "blasphemy"

I just never said anything to people sneezing right through growing up... I found out the reason behind it when I was young and thought it was a silly tradition that didn't make sense anymore (and I didn't feel comfortable saying it anyway as I knew I wasn't religious from an early age) (...afaik it was a possible sign of contracting the black plague so people used to bless each other after hearing a sneeze in hope that it wasn't) now I just make a joke of a sneeze it and go "You What!?" to the sneezer.
The only swearing I reaslly use is For F***'s Sake! But I do know I say 'Jebus' and O.M.G. etc. By rights religious people shouldn't be saying the 'lawds name' in vain anyway... when I say 'Bloody hell' in front of my mother she usually has a wry smile and says 'yeah it probably is' and leaves it at that. :)
It's just slang, don't worry too much about it... like you said it would bother most fundies anyway.

Ah but the more fundies get bothered by things the more they are dismissed as cranks ;)

If somebody catches me unawares and asks me for my "Christian name", I'll tell them! Old habits die hard.

I remember once, when I was greatly shocked and dumbfounded that I screamed "Oh... GOD!" with an xtian standing next to me. She went silent, and I apologized to her.
She says it doesn't matter since, that's between me and God. :D
I have no problem with saying God... cause it just shows my frustration at a failed being (if he did exist).

I have been to two Xtian schools (oh the pain! the horrible horrible pain!) and they are absolute bastards! they are SOOO picky that even if you say "God!" they'll punish you (they think saying "God" is "swearing" you see...)

Hi Duffy, nice to meet you!
I understand your personal frustration over this phrasing. I used to cringe whenever I inadvertantly said any of the above as well. The thing I have realised however is, they are just merely turns of phrase, in a sense drilled into us and we use, ironically in unbelievable situations! lol
I sometimes say "holy *hit" too but don't chide myself over it.
I guess it comes down to understanding within ones self the irrelevance of the "god" word as anything but a word.
