View Full Version : Being part of the AFA forums...

Logic

I just wanted to say that I am so glad I joined this forum. :o I feel a lot smarter about a whole lot of issues. I also feel very clear headed and a have a strong sense of direction about secularism/politics/government and all that sort of stuff due to my involvement here. Being part of this forum also makes me research about more issues/topics (atheist related and not) and continue to learn every day.

The downside is, I seem to be slowly dropping people off the friends list as I just can't tolerate the stupidity, the ignorance and the apathy anymore. Atheism, and more importantly, the fight for a secular society, have become a large part of what I stand for to the point where strongly held opposing views have sometimes become friendship deal breakers for me.

So anyway, to everyone who is part of this online community and the AFA for creating it.... thanks. I think. :p

Sounds like one of two things are the case. Either you've got friends to burn, or U won't mind being lonely. Who knows.. sometimes change can be good.

Personally, I don't have friends to burn. A fair number of my friends are religious, but I don't think I'll be cutting any ties with them based purely on their religious viewpoints. Incidentally, I have deliberately cut ties with 3 very close friends in the past (two of which I'd known in excess of 25 years), and I can tell U, it's neither easy nor pleasant. I would not invite the opportunity so readily.

I do, however, sympathise with your frustration, and understand the issue of respect (or lack thereof). And.. I, too, am most thankful for my experience here at this forum.

My wife is mildly religious and we still take the kids to school most weeks (I am either bored out of my mind, or seething with rage at the stupidity of it all). My mother in law is deeply religious, as is her son. My father is now a deist after our discussions, but only stops there because of emotional reasons. I have cut tie with some old friends because their views are too stupid for me to maintain the illusion I respect them. I have also gained many new rational and wonderful friendships. Such is the relationship roller coaster ride of of the sceptic. Such is life.

Welcome aboard.

Well said Logic. I feel the same way. My brain has worked overtime since joining this forum. I find myself nutting through issues in my head while Im driving, in the shower, or in the garden. My aged father has for years done this strange thing in his house where he has all the clocks set on different times. His reason; he has to make a mental calculation everytime he wants to know the time. "Use it or lose it", is the motivation. Im hoping this forum is still around when Im his age so I dont have to go to the same lengths. Also, I know the dilemma with the friend question too. After a while here, what used to be acceptable conjectures from friends is often now ridiculous. However, I have to be true to myself and in some cases, move on. That's life. :)

Forgetting that I am a mod, I think I needed to find this place; it has taught me many things about myself and the world around me... I am very privileged to be a part of it.

As a mod I hope that I can contribute and give back something to each and every person I interact with and learn with them... even if I don't agree with them on all things.

I never stop learning and for this I am most appreciative of being here with so many fantastic intellectual minds. I hope one day I have the knowledge to be a source of information for others.

I sense the next step in my journey will be to become pro-active, who knows!

Thanks Logic... your contributions here like many others bring me much learning opportunity... not to mention getting to know fantastic people. :D

Logic-al.
Being lonely and choosing to be a loner are entirely different concepts. People often muddle it up by equating one with the other. Loners are often quite contented; the lonely are often miserable, and need some sort of help.

I don't find people annoying, I'm just disinterested (ie, NOT uninterested) with most people.

Being on a forum like this is useful; no obligations, no pressure, etc. And one does get to know posters in a remote sort of way. That's good - for me anyway.

That's not scary. As I pointed out many years ago when leet first became popular, all the real serious geeks I knew back then made jokes in ASCII rendered as hex.

Script-kiddies hated that observation.

The scary thing is I can read leet as easy as normal text..At the risk of going 0ff t0p1x0rZ: I was recently (in fact, less than 2-3 weeks ago) diagnosed with Irlen syndrome. Funny enough, that effectively means that, given the right lighting conditions (eg. fluoros/CCFL tubes in laptops for example) and right medium (eg. bright/white background and dark/black text) everything looks rather 1337 to me.

In fact, I can't even tell the difference under these conditions! Some letters disappear, some break up and blink in front of me, there are white cracks in the page.

To compensate, I have to look at t3h ph0rUmZ using a ridiculously retarded user stylesheet that turns ALL the text into white text, and ALL the backgrounds into black.

Using BBcode helps me determine what you may/may not be able to see. A lot of what I type in different colors is just guesswork with BBcode there.

I hope my lenses come in soon. Of course, I should advise they aren't your ordinary glasses. The specialist who prescribed them calls them "Base 8 lenses" (known as "Prescription Aviators" to this reptile) although they are not so polarizing.

Although like you I can read 1337 in the same way (although a little easier in many cases!) than ordinary text.

if you type apt-get help, you will notice at the bottom of the help text, if your APT has Super Cow Powers.

if it does, then you can :

$ aptitude -vv moo

If you are using gnome, at the initial login screen try typing some of these :

Start Dancing (also Stop Dancing)
Gimme Random Cursor

for your login ... the actual function is called 'evil' and you can see the source reference code for it here :

For those of you on windows who feel left out because you have no Super Cow, if you have firefox try typing some these as the URL :

You mean like Windows? :p

One command for you Croc :)

# aptitude -f dist-upgrade

:p

or just something as simple as a ram disk.

If you use Ubuntu /dev/shm is a ramdisk already available. You can make a directory in there and then add a shortcut to nautilus.

eg; In the startup programs (System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications) add a command that just says this.

mkdir /dev/shm/RAM

Then restart and navigate to /dev/shm in Nautilus and drag the RAM directory into the sidebar to make a bookmark

You now have an easily accessible Ramdisk that is half the size of your total RAM. (beware restarting your machine clears the ramdisk, but for running applications etc it's really fast, good stuff especially if you have heaps of ram)

Crocodile
16th April 2010, 10:59 AM
You can do the same thing by downloading the 0.4 SVN build of ReactOS and selecting "ReactOS (RAM Disk)" in the boot menu. :p

I personally love the idea of a ramdisk like this, especially since nothing is written to the hard disk, and no need for hard disk access. Perfect for real-time apps.

Come to think of it, Windows PE 2.0 does this automatically, although it uses up a hell of a lot of RAM: I tried stripping my PE down a little, and it still needed a whopping 192MB to run!

the 'leet haxors' already know all about this stuff.

I would be more worried that someone uses the java exploit I posted (has every windows user here updated their java version last few days?)

It would be a simple matter to downgrade someones java using that, from any web page, to a more exploitable version, gaining more privileges.

as per :
http://seclists.org/fulldisclosure/2010/Apr/119

the example code source explains a downgrade for instance to an older version of java :
http://sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1-66-244991-1

then you effectively could read, write and execute anything on the target machine.

gotta love windows

@TheDoer: Every example of mine has been encrypted, and can be deciphered mechanically, with a single exception (http://www.atheistfoundation.org.au/forums/showpost.php?p=73096&postcount=39), which carries the kind of solution only visible under a Ctrl-A light. :)

I wouldn't call ROT13 and posting things in hex referring to ASCII 'encryption'. They're just amusing little joke cyphers.

Well, the first words it "Thanks", but I can't be bothered manually converting the rest.

(Key: each group of three numbers is an ascii code representing a letter. to decode, break the words up into groups of 3 and refer to an ascii chart. I'm not sure what that d is doing in there.)

Good guess.

That 'd', is a hint for the word. Either that, or I screwed up the conversion :P

Actually, I got a little compulsive about it and translated most of it. Really, I don't think that using leet will really let you pass people's internal censors. A handy way to say sensitive words? Well, maybe. But I doubt it.

@The Doer: I guess magic doesn't always work the first time.

Some amateur wizards may cast the hex yet again if the satisfactory metamorphosis is not achieved, perhaps.

(This is not expected to make sense.)

Oh, that versatile "Gnyagghhh": is there anything it can't say?It cannot go past the MBT (Maximum Bullshit Threshold) which is approximately 666 picobibles of crap. Anything more than that will result in a ruptured bozon energy field, thus resulting in the destruction of two neurons, creating one moron.
