May I pick your brains?

Don't like Outlook Express and find Hotmail cumbersome.I've been using Thunderbird for a while, but have been having some problems recently.

Does anyone know of any other decent mail servers?

Are you looking at mail server software to install on your computer, or existing mail services like Gmail though?

I stopped using Hotmail since 2005 when Gmail came out.

First off, mail servers are not what you are talking about. You are talking about mail clients.

There are applications for both webmail and offline usage, and stuff like gmail is webmail with an offline ability (using google gears)

really it depends on your use-case.

Oh. OK.

Gmail? Can I make it my default Email or does its use a separate address?

Personally I go with GMail as my mail service (until I get myself a domain), and access using IMAP and things are sorted.

old news, get with the times! google gears allows a local cache/db of data for sites ;) it's now standard in gmail as an option, just turn it on

you create an address just like @hotmail.com but as username@gmail.com

it's a free mail service from google, like hotmail, just better in my opinion.

Otherwise I would stick with thunderbird, but I am on linux and use 'evolution' instead.

@Davo sorry to be so dense, but I'm still not sure I understand.

What I want is to be able to use the Email address allocated by my ISP. IE username@adam.conm.ausothatwheNioepn gamilit recieebvs all my email as does Thunderbird----currently stuffed: I can receive but not send -something about SMTP -AUTH authentication. In need to unclick the name and password but can't find it the setting..

No problem, just explain clearly ...

I am having trouble working out what you are saying .. are you trying to get gmail to connect and download email to your gmail account?

or is it your thunderbird not working?

remove the settings for checking username and password from thunderbirds SMTP settings that sends email thru your ISP mailserver. Your ISP mail server will already know you are authorised to send email thru it, as you will be connected to them via dialup or broadband already.

or is it your thunderbird not working?Sorry about the typos; I'se having a bad day. I want my Gmail address to be my normal address as provided by my ISP and used for Thunderbird.

Thunderbird was broken but I fixeded it..

----------------------------------------------------------------

I'm having a bad day because I went and installed Linux Mint on my old Pentium 3 and cannot connect to the internet.

What I've done:

Googled

Asked at the Mint forum---they told me to ask the ISP.

Asked the the ISP and got a Linux lover who told me Linux can be "a
bit fussy with old network cards" .He suggested I check with Netcomm.

Asked Netcomm;their response; "sorry but we do not support Linux."

Back to Googling for a bit. If I can't fix it very soon,I'm going back to Windows.

If I understand you correctly, you want to use gmail all the time, and have it go grab your email from your ISP and drag it into it.

Go to your gmail Settings.

click on Accounts and Import (https://mail.google.com/mail/?shva=1#settings/accounts)

click the check mail via POP and it should pop up a dialog box and walk you thru the process

With regard the netcomm card, what type of card is it? is it a wireless card? If you have the model number post it.

Some wireless cards rely on software in windows to work, and can be a pain getting going because of that.
