On start up error message:
'
'Failed to load resource file check set up'
Could that be causing the sound problem?

Any more code than that?
Another insommniac?
No other code.
I Googled; another common error. A couple of people have said it's caused by a stack overflow. (?)
Re the sound problem: Some person on a forum claimed to have had the same problem after a format and reinstall. That it was fixed by running 'repair' from the OS disc. Worth trying?

Repair might do it, but IIRC there was a means of restoring that sneaky Dell partition, somewhere in our January discussion.
Yes there was. Doesn't the hard drive need to be FAT32? Mine is NTFS.
Oh I think the not loading resource file may be ATI catalyst control centre OR ATI software uninstall utility. An ATI app closed just after start up,with warning. I didn't notice which one.

I suggest not installing ATI Catalyst and seeing how it goes. I remember having LOTS of problems with screens blanking in the middle of nowhere, mouse going funny, and definitely sound static.
It may/may not have to do with this error, but uninstalling ATI Catalyst seemed to fix my problem up.
"Failed to load resources" sounds like a VB error, which an application cannot load a resource that it requires. Probably a bug in the app, requesting a nonexistent resource.
