View Full Version : Outrageous ABC news coverage Sunday evening

Just saw some appalling coverage of the convention by the ABC on SA evening news. The short snippet was interspersed with comment from one of the Melbourne bishops and his flock.

If anyone else was annoyed post a comment over here

http://www2b.abc.net.au/tmb/Client/NewMessage.aspx?b=81&t=1

before I get drowned out by the regular ABC theists or chopped by the ABC mods.

Yep - saw it. Disgraceful.

However, I'm absolutely too bloody exhausted to do anything about it other than blow a large raspberry at the television.

I need about 16 hours' sleep :)

I've wanted to keep an eye on the news this weekend, but have been distracted and missed all news broadcasts so far. Am trying to find a way to watch any stories online..

Links anyone ?

Damn I can't spell. It's ABC of course.

I wonder if it stands for Atheists Be Cursed

I think I saw the same coverage here in Vic... but there was one little snippet of Dawkins mentioning that any voice of opposition (from Atheists) is looked upon by the religious as aggressive (can't recall his exact words). Was worth it just for that.

The rest of the segment was a bit rough and lacking substance.

Sounds the same as what SA got. I couldn't see the point of the bishop and his congregation. I was wondering if next time they cover a political convention they will let all the other parties have a go in the middle of it ?

I assume they have passed coverage of the atheist convention to the religion department.

Yes thanks. That sheds some interesting light.

After Q&A, Rudd and Abbott and then this I am starting to feel like I live in Texas. Maybe I do live in Texas.

Thanks for that Justin. First coverage I've seen beyond twatters (is that the right term ? :p ) and blogsters.

Mr Freier doesn't seem to have a very good grasp of the concept of atheism. No, sir, we won't be "developing a coherent position" (obviously expecting it to be a single replacement viewpoint for his religion). I guess if all his flock follow his word explicitly, it's easy to see how they don't understand it, either.

"No more than the latest golden calf" eh ? ?

I wish someone had told me we were having a BBQ ! :D

Here's a decent summary of the event:

Edit: caught and post eaten by the 5 words too short bug again

I hope this hasn't been mentioned before - the coverage by ABC at this blog was beyond the pall

http://blogs.radionational.net.au/atheistconvention/

From endless repetitions of 'hurt card' over atheism is so intolerant of me the whiner to Stalin=Jefferson, personality cult dictatorships=secular democracy, the output here is truely vile.

I almost feel sorry for the theists being defended by this slop

I don't. It actually reminded me of what the lady who chaired the women's panel (first name? surname Doig, I know that!) who talked about speaking at the Parliament of World Religions. The panel had a small period of time (40 mins or 90 mins or something) to speak about the secular life, feminism, morality, etc. and the rest of the weekend was all religious guff, yet in Q&A time a woman stood up and whined "I feel I haven't been heard at all this weekend"

Frankly, I'm utterly sick of their whiney-ass attitudes and the GAC weekend has galvanised me out of my comfortable zone and made me realise that we need to make much more of an effort to have our POV heard.

If they hold these ridiculous beliefs, they'd better be prepared to be called on them.

Totally agree Praxis - I did say almost :) and now that momentary feeling has completely vanished - to be replaced by deep regret that I didn't get myself to Melbourne this weekend (although it would've been difficult)

I read some more of that slop - and a Friday blog entry lamented how this convention was having fun on the Friday night - as if it was a bad thing! Atheism should be like science and all serious claimed the nutter - I did log onto that post and replied that science does have the IgNoble prizes that's about fun and learning. I should've also said that science and discovery is fun in itself. But yeah, we're not aloowed to have fun - and especially not poke fun at deities or theists because it hurts them so ...

ohh I need a bex and a lie down to think these clowns are funded by my taxes to write this drivel...

But, the Australian article is good... at least they have simply focussed on the content and not had to 'take sides'. The ABC report is surprisingly stupid - for the ABC. Thanks for posting that Justin.

I only managed to get to the Sunday but wow what a day!!! Loved every second, even the crazy woman who had to tell us she thanks god every day... eh.

It was incredibly uplifting to be among so many like minded people, brilliant. :D

Hanging for the dvd, my family want to see it.

Meredith.

I recall that, because the interesting young woman from Inverell (in NSW) who I was sitting next to Saturday (and who said she was a shepherd, and an artist), said she did a ride with her on Royal Enfield motobikes in India/Nepal in 2008!
