Hi there
I'm looking forward to the convention next week and hoping to meet up with 'free-market' atheists or followers of Ayn Rand philosophy. Let me know if you are out there......

Goodness, AA, you mean there are free markets somewhere? :)
I don't think that FM's have been around since the middle ages.

I haven't read any Ayn Rand, although I do own a book, and have an Ayn Rand folder in my ebooks that I've never looked in, so could somebody explain what a "free market atheist" is?
edit; a quick google search suggests it's just an atheist who also supports free market economics. Sounds unlikely given the major proponents of free market economics in most countries are the conservative right, who are also the strongest supporters of religious values. I did note a while ago though that when the infamous "hot liberal girls" website was up (I'm fairly sure it's been taken down) with pictures of girls in bikinis who are also members/employees of the Liberal Party, a large number were reading Ayn Rand books. As I said before, I haven't read any Ayn Rand and have just a general idea of what she said, and perhaps this is a reflection of who I hang out with, but mostly I only hear people respond to her work with derision.

If by free-market atheist, you mean a "right-wing" economic philosophy (as termed by politicalcompass.org) - then Hi, I am.
But I will not be at the convention.

Well I was going to say 'capitalist' but thought that may mark me as an avaricious, materialistic atheist! - but I guess that's the problem with 'ists' it does tend to put people in boxes.
And yes it is possible to be right-wing and atheist! Unfortunately right-wing and religion tend to be lumped in the same category.

:) I was hoping someone would say something similar ... I am an anarcho-syndicalist :)
Thank goodness the OP didn't say 'anarcho-capitalist' as some confused folk claim, coz then it would be on for young and old  :D
ps: I tried really hard not to respond earlier ;)

Capitalism is not that, it is a system of defining property as state-protected monopolies of certain objects or privileges which are then used to control and exploit others.
"And since neither property nor capital produces anything when not fertilized by labor--that means the power and the right to live by exploiting the works of someone else, the right to exploit the work of those who possess neither property nor capital and who thus are forced to sell their productive power to the lucky owners of both." Bakunin
capitalism is cannibalism :P

Laportes gigas would be currently known in QLD as Dendrocnide excelsa, the giant stinging tree.

Greetings AA and other free-market / market anarchist atheists!
Hope to be attending on Sunday - trying to arrange a ticket. Would love to meet up with you.
I live right next to the convention center (just across the river) so also welcome all non-commie atheists to come by for a drink / smoke / whatever... Just PM me for my number.
Hopefully I'll get a ticket and be there on Sunday, wearing a Danneskjold Repossessions t-shirt :)

Spurious I know, but if you like computer games, give Bioshock a try (if you haven't already) - it's like Second Life for Rand-ites :).

What do you mean by free market? I'm in favour markets but I wouldn't say I'm pro-free markets in the same way as people who, say, post about it on the interwebz. I'm more a wet small-l liberal. But very interested in the issues.
