Do any Melbournites have suggestions re good, but not outrageously expensive, eating places in the Convention Centre/Hilton South Wharf vicinity?

Some I've found on the internet that sound interesting are:

Peko Peko Cafe at South Melbourne

Blue Train Cafe at Southgate

World Restaurant Bar at Southbank

and

Mecca Bah at Docklands

Any comments on these or other suggestions?

If you dare to venture further into the city, Sichuan House on Corrs Lane is, in my opinion, Melbourne's best restaurant. Mains are about $20 a pop, and VERY spicy.

Kristy, you can't walk 10 metres in Melbourne without finding somewhere to eat!

The Blue Train is good.

Also, I hate to say it (because I loathe the place) but Crown Ca$hino has a restaurant (or two?) which have pretty decent prices (because they want you to spend your $$ on gaming, not the food) so if you can resist the lure of the gaming machines with their relentless electronic music (I use the word advisedly), that's somewhere else to think about.

When I'm in town I generally eat in Chinatown as it's cheap and cheerful. Hmm, a bit like me really :D

I may have some international guests so I wanted something a bit less 'generic' than Crown Casino.

I have been to Melbourne many times and know it's thick with restaurants. But I don't want to take my friends to a restaurant only to find it's bloody awful. That's why I'm asking for recommendations. My knowledge of Melbourne restaurants is, sadly, way out of date.

If anyone is keen on Vegetarian food, there is a place on Brunswick street in Fitzroy called Vegebar. All food is Vegetarian(mostly vegan) and tastes amazing. I still go there even after I gave up on Vegetarianism. It's about a 5 minute tram ride from the city.

Bluetrain as mentioned is good, as is automatic (in crown). To be honest I wouldn't bother with anything in docklands, that whole place is a ghost town with no atmosphere. A walk down lygon street is good if you can't decide... Every building for about 1km is a Restaurant.

There is also a McDonalds on most streets. in the city..

I hope this helps

Thanks Benny, that does help.

My better half took me to the Blue Train last week.

I liked it, and the prices were ok.

Also the food looks great at the Restaurant located at the 'LAST' stop of the 112 tram route, St Kilda, Fitroy St. Admitadely I haven't eaten there yet. Though, it is almost always busy, and has a nice atmosphere about it. (I travel to that area almost every 2nd day).

What sort of cuisine do you prefer, Kristy?

The new area's of Melbourne (i.e. Docklands, South Warf, South Bank, Casino) are, in my noodly opinion, a big bereft of culture. At Docklands try 'Bopha Devi' - great Cambodian/Thai food.

Granted if you have the money then Nobu at Crown is incredible as is the Japanese restaurant there. But I hate Casino's. So I would recommend that you high-tail it in a Taxi to Lygon St, Carlton if you like Italian food. Fitzroy St, St Kilda (various cuisines) or even better read about a few places using http://www.urbanspoon.com/c/71/Melbourne-restaurants.html

Cool, any suggestions for restaurants within easy cab distance? I like all cuisines, but was hoping for something a little quirky/Aussie/atmospheric for friends from abroad. Maybe even a good pub with good, reasonably priced food.

Although, Blue Train's looking good so far.

5 minute cab ride to 'The Maori Chief' in South Melbourne. Modern Pub, great food. 'O'Connells Pub' in Sth Melbourne also close by.

I've taken foreigners to 'The Stokehouse' in St Kilda (right on the water, nice area for walking, and great on a summery night. The bistro bit downstairs is more affordable, upstairs more expensive. They loved it.

Anyway, Melb is best explored!

Thanks FSM. Really good info. I agree about exploring Melbourne, but unfortunately, the pace of the Convention doesn't allow for much exploring time.
