Global Atheist Convention - Sold out!

30 January, 10

Tickets for The Rise of Atheism, 2010 Global Atheist Convention are now sold out! The Convention, to be held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre 12 - 14 March 2010, has attracted substantial Australian and international interest and tickets have sold out more than five weeks before the Convention starts.

David Nicholls, President of the Atheist Foundation of Australia said "We are thrilled with the support for the Convention, from the presenters, the attendees and the many people who have volunteered their time and expertise. With over 2,500 attendees, the Global Atheist Convention will be the largest gathering of freethinkers in Australia's history, and may be the largest atheist convention ever! The Convention will be a celebration of global atheism, a wonderful opportunity to hear the thoughts of scientists, philosophers, writers, comedians and many others, and a statement to political leaders of our concern about the negative effects of religion on society."

Even though tickets have sold out we are still receiving a substantial number of enquiries about sales and we are sorry that many people who would like to attend will miss out on this unique event. Given the strong interest in the Global Atheist Convention we are investigating filming options for a DVD of the event and hope one will be on sale shortly after the Convention" Nicholls continued.

Stuart Bechman, President of Atheist Alliance International, co-host of the Global Atheist Convention added, "The response to The Rise of Atheism Convention has been absolutely fantastic! This will be the largest convention AAI has been involved with and we're excited that atheism and secularism are so well supported in Australia. With such a high level of interest we will have to consider returning to Australia for future conventions."

Presenters at the Global Atheist Convention include Richard Dawkins, Peter Singer, Phillip Adams, PZ Myers, AC Grayling, Taslima Nasrin, Catherine Deveny, Dan Barker, Robyn Williams, Julian Morrow, Craig Reucassel, Maggie Millar, Lyn Allison, Tanya Levin, Leslie Cannold, Jane Caro and many more!

For further information on the Global Atheist Convention visit www.atheistconvention.org.au (http://www.atheistconvention.org.au).

We'll see you in Melbourne!

Congratulations, and a BIG thank you, to the organising committee, and others, who have made this possible, through their dedicated, tireless, and unpaid efforts!

And may I also thank the state and federal governments for their support, NOT!

Cheers,
___Julian

Well I haven't said anything up until now because I really wanted to go but believe it or not had a prior engagement for that weekend (my Birthday) the plans were cancelled today and I bought a ticket just a few hours ago... missed the weekend pass unfortunately but yeah... I consider myself VERY lucky to be one of the last!

Thank you to all the organisers and and extra thank you to you Lee for keeping us informed.

It must be a sign!

The signs are on the buses silly!

What a birthday present for yourself. They are always the best ones.

Congratulations to all. A mighty effort by all concerned - and a great relief to have reached the target as well!

A massive thank you from me, too, to everyone involved in pulling this together. It's really fantastic and I'm just so excited I'm going to be a part of it :D

Fearless, all this time I just assumed you would have a full weekend pass! Oh well, at least I'll get to meet you on the Sunday then. You're not getting away without it :p

Lee, I've copied the media release into my thread over at RDF so everyone can see it. Response has been terrific from over there. And here's an interesting comment from poster Darwinsbulldog (I know Rob and he won't mind me cross-posting it here), which I thought was an interesting take on things: [he posted it just before I posted the Sold Out! update]

So 2500 minus 18 tickets = lots and lots of Commonwealth and Victorian funding for us kind skeptics http://forum.richarddawkins.net/images/smilies/icon_ask.gif http://forum.richarddawkins.net/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif http://forum.richarddawkins.net/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif

You know when a society is truly degenerate culturally when skeptics are not valued. http://forum.richarddawkins.net/images/smilies/icon_sad.gif http://forum.richarddawkins.net/images/smilies/icon_sad.gif http://forum.richarddawkins.net/images/smilies/icon_sad.gif

It reminds me of the diggers who came back from Vietnam-they were spat on and treated hysterically by the populace.

"Baby killers!" Was the hue and cry! Never mind that they had served their country, and it was the government that sent them, and in the case of conscripts, they used force.

I wish the governments would have the bottle to call us criminals. That, at least, would put things in the open, and battle lines could be drawn. As it is, what do they expect that we do ? Slink around guiltily and consider ourselves second class citizens, barely tolerated http://forum.richarddawkins.net/images/smilies/icon_ask.gif

I hope there will be a DVD. If there is, put me down for one. Please.

A DVD is a good idea for those that can't travel, but still want to share in the experience.
