Haiti made a deal with the devil?

That's why this has happened to them?

o'rly?

I am not a violent man but i wanted to reach through my monitor and slap that guy.

And such is the process of a theists mind... explain a catastrophe by how a group of people turned their back on god.

And he is hoping that they will now wake up, find god and have a better way of life? What an insulting bastard!!!

Arrrg!

Yep, Black- the schtick's getting verrrrrrrry long in the tooth... god hates fags, soldiers etc, abortion law reform caused Black Saturday bushfires... now a deal wit de debbil caused the Haitian earthquake...

*yawn*

Unfortunately, it's a schtick with a payday.

If you're a godbotherer who is running low on media attention, tithes are not rolling in fast enough to fuel the Gulfstream... just pick a natural disaster and pin it on pissing off the sky daddy. *cha-ching*!

It explains any disaster that doesn't include his "good" self. It absolves him of any guilt or feelings of impotency at seeing others suffer and being unable to help.

It helps raise his feelings of superiority over all others by saying this was deserved because they didn't say the right thing, or have lots of money, or face south at the right time.

Insecure people with very large and undeserved egos, and possibly very small other things need to be superior, and if kicking people when they are down helps then they are fair game.

The people of Haiti were so far down even before this this they are incapable of responding to this moron, which suits the coward nicely.

Personally I think it helps them feel as though the whole world revolves around them and their god, so any chance to express how things could possibly relate they open their mouth.

I mean it's 'god' how could that be anything bad whatever you say? sigh

A pox, not only on Pat Robertson, but on the dozy dora who was interviewing him and the TV station that allows this kind of drivel to see light of day on the airwaves.

If it wasn't good ol' Pat, it would have been one of the other raving looneys. Let's face it, Abbott was probably thinking it.

The reason that the TV station allowed this kind of drivel to be broadcast probably has something to do with the fact that CBN (http://www.cbn.com) (The Christian Broadcasting Network) is owned by Pat Robertson!

Yep, there's nothing like that good ol' Christian love and compassion for your fellow man eh?

Haitian ambassador responds to Pat Robertson

Jan. 13: Rachel Maddow replays the reaction of Haitian ambassador to the U.S., Raymond Joseph, to the claim by televangelist Pat Robertson that the earthquake in Haiti is the result of a 200-year-old Haitian "deal with the devil."

He may be able to make them play this rubbish but they don't have to like it. I like the news anchors comment, "that was Pat Robertson, the unintended consequence of the first ammendment".

I lurk on a hard-right evangelical christian message board. Already there is much speculation that the earthquake is due to many Haitians' practice of 'voodoo'.

In addition, it appears that the frootloop Pat Robertson is attributing the quake to early Haitian separatists making a deal with Satan, in order to leave Napoleon III's empire. Very peculiar. He contrasts Haiti's history of disasters with the peaceful existence of adjoining Dominican Republic.

http://thinkprogress.org/2010/01/13/robertson-haiti/

Robertson conveniently omits the natural disasters that have struck the Dominican Republic.

When will this end are they THAT desperate for attention?

So this is divine payback for a slave revolt in the 1700s..

Yes, apparently the sky daddy thought powerful white Europeans should have slaves- and their rebellion displeaseth Him.

But Pat Robertson isn't a racist, nope.

Rachel Maddow is a gift to the godless. Probably the best working journo in the USA at the moment.

Nail on the head. Yes I agree and think that it is the media outlet that should get hammered for giving this guy oxygen. There will always be looneys but they only carry weight and do the damage because their views are publicised in this way. Its a bad reflection on the media business who should be more socially responsible.

By the way this story was repeated on our very own ABC website on the news just in page.

Already there is much speculation that the earthquake is due to many Haitians' practice of 'voodoo'.

I seem to recall hearing somewhere that many Haitians are xtian and also practice "voodoo". Must make deciding who to smite a tricky business.

Surely Robertson expects xtian Haitians to have been spared, this could easily be tested (in future, much else to be done there just now), but I doubt he would bother.

Ah yes, here it is, from: http://countrystudies.us/haiti/33.htm

"Roman Catholicism is the official religion of Haiti, but voodoo may be considered the country's national religion. The majority of Haitians believe in and practice at least some aspects of voodoo. Most voodooists believe that their religion can coexist with Catholicism. Most Protestants, however, strongly oppose voodoo."

Robertson appeared on the 700 Club (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_700_Club), his own TV show. The 700 Club runs on the Christian Broadcasting Network (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Broadcasting_Network), owned by... Pat Robertson.

Hammer them if you like. They're unlikely to care.

Actually, I think the Black Saturday bushfires were blamed by Danny Nalliah on abortion law reform in Victoria. Did Robertson also stir the possum?

And if you weren't already horrified enough by this self-righteous sadistic blather, check out the follow-up.

Jan. 14: Rachel Maddow follows up on the cruel remarks by televangelist Pat Robertson that the earthquake in Haiti was the consequence of a Haitian deal with the devil. A statement from the Christian Broadcast Network reveals there was no misunderstanding; Robertson meant it.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908/vp/34872839#34872839 (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908/vp/34872839#34872839)

That's right; it wasn't God who caused the earthquake, it was the devil! Apparently the devil had the shits with the Haitians because of some 18th century deal he made with them.

Yeah, right. Sure Pat. That's what happened.

OR

It could have been an earthquake. You know, a disturbance in the Earth's crust? Just putting it out there.
