Watching the news coverage of the VIC bushfire disaster, I am fed up to my bucked teeth with stories of survival being referred to as 'miracles'.

We need to give credit to the heroics and fortitude of those involved to manage to get themselves out of danger whether through determination to survive or just sheer luck of circumstances. The idea of miracle does no justice to those that weren't so fortunate, as if not worthy of a miracle.

In my simple view of it, a miracle is merely an unexpected outcome. And again those shouting Christian faith in the hand of God are deafening in their silence about those that sadly perished.

*sigh* people see what they want to see.:(

One of volunteers said when interviewed, "we are christians so of course we help each other"

My eyes scanned the people in the background. My heart wanted one of them to shout "hey moron, I'm an atheist and I'm bloody here to help too!!"

The prayer-and-that's-it thing just pisses me off, and always has done.

To those who fold their hands, instead of putting them to work: "Listen, dumbots, if god is going to burn, earthquake, flood, freeze or bung a pestilence in the midst of a bunch of people, aren't you being a bit unholy asking him to go about undoing his work?"

Or you could stop kidding yourselves that you've actually achieved anything, and wipe that smug look away, then go and do, donate or demonstrate some actual dedication to whatever comes out of your mouth.

I hear ya! Their holier than thou attitude shits me to tears.

We help because we want to, need to. Because our hearts are breaking for them and we have empathy, not because god might punish us in the hereafter for not helping thy neighbour! Grrrrrr.

National Breaking News!!! (http://www.news.com.au/story/0,27574,25057396-29277,00.html)

MELBOURNE'S Christian churches have united to pray for people affected by Victoria's devastating bushfires.

Several hundred people from 17 churches across the city gathered in the Fitzroy Gardens after their morning church services today.

They prayed for those who died in the fires and those who lost their homes.

Prayers of thanks were given to the many volunteers and workers who have fought the fires and looked after those affected by the tragedy.

Maureen Postma, chairman of the Victorian Council of Churches, said the bushfires had led some people to question their faith.

"Some have used this week to promote themselves and speak of a God of retribution, others have asked how can we believe in a powerful God who allows this to happen?

"We know that we do not have answers to all of their questions," she said.
Ms Postma said the extent and the ferocity of the bushfires was tragic.

"Today in this time and this place it is a time to focus on all those who have suffered and died because of the fires," she said.

Jacqui Ryan, a former resident of Yea, layed a wreath beside a large cross in memory of the bushfire victims.

"It is a very terrible time all this week, great to be asked (to lay the wreath)," she said.

Ms Ryan said she had many friends in Kinglake and Flowerdale who were affected by the fires.

Victorian Governor Dr David de Kretser said the service passed on a message that the Christian churches were thinking of those who have suffered from the bushfires.

"This is going to go on for a long time, several years, that is very important that we don't forget all the people," he said.

So they all feel they've done their bit now and gained a few more brownie points for their death trip... morons.

Praying: how to sit on your hands without the risk of crushing them under your idle arse. (My original, as far as I know.)

It's a miracle when there is survivors but it's "gods will" when they die. They have all the bases covered don't they?

Let's stop '[thanking] God for the Salvos" (as they put it) and start thanking the Salvos.
