G'day from Sydney,
Just coming back from Sydney today coming off the M2 and saw across the lanes near the onramp off Pennant Hills Road was a massive white billboard saying 'JESUS IS LOVE' with Hillsong underneath it.

Does anyone know who put it up? Or how long it's been there?

Makes my blood boil!

Cheers
Carolyn

I don't have any answers to the billboard questions, but wanted to say "welcome", anyway!

Howdy Carolyns, warm welcome to the AFA Forum!

Would you mind telling us a bit more about yourself? We're a rather insatiably curious lot and like d-e-t-a-i-l-s. :D

Hi Carolyn, welcome. I guess they are entitled to thier opinion. I think turkish delight chocolate is love:D That's why the bus campaign is important, so atheist can put forward our alternate view. I think what is worse is the ones that claim religion as fear 'you will burn in hell if you don't repent your sins'.

OK about myself!
I am an Atheist mother of 3. Joined AFA a few months ago and started the AFA Facebook page which now has over 200 fans!:D
I live on the Central Coast NSW.
What else...well I think I've been Atheist all my life. Parents sent me to Sunday school a few times, but I could never buy it, even at that age. Even dabbled in ISCF at Highschool, but yeah, still didn't make sense to me. Then upon learning basic biology in Highschool and the subject evolution, everything just made so much more sense. :p
Now that I'm raising kids and one is in school, I can see how non-secular everything seems to be in the public system and have big issues about the way scripture is promoted in our school and non-scripture has 'limited places available'.

So that's me in a nutshell.
Thank you for the welcome, it's so refreshing to chat to a bunch of like-minded people!

Talk soon!
C

Carolyn, We can only assume the money used to put the billboard up was taken from people that thought their donated money was to be used for charity, but was sadly diverted for religious and political advertising as it is so often!
At least the money was not used for methamphetamines and paying for male prostitutes like rabid evangelical pastor Ted Haggard does in the USA?
But with the way laws are at present, religions can do anything they want with donated money, even fund right wing political parties?
But think positive if these signs are annoying you they are probably annoying many others as well, having the opposite affect of the religious scoundrels that put them up! http://www.atheistfoundation.org.au/forums/images/icons/icon12.gif HFR

Couldn't this billboard be used as evidence against the rejection of AFA advertisments on Transit media? Or would it need to be a religious transit advertisment?

GenericBox, depends who is providing the advertisements, finding out who put it up is the first step.

The AFA adverts were refused by one private company, that happens to have the contract for bus advertising. (which I think they should have their contract revoked), as far as I know, there isn't really any other companies providing that particular service (I could be wrong).

Obviously AFA is trying to keep our efforts in line with overseas bus advertising efforts, rather than static bill boards, but definitely if it's the same group providing them .....

To know how much the billboard cost, and publicise it, spreads a message: maybe the church has money to throw round, and doesn't need so much from its less-fanatical members.

Every little helps in deduction as well as addition>

So far as we know to date, anyway.

Again, openness about the large sums being moved from church to politics will surely give moderate churchgoers a reason to reflect on what is happening.

But think positive if these signs are annoying you they are probably annoying many others as well, having the opposite affect of the religious scoundrels that put them up! http://www.atheistfoundation.org.au/forums/images/icons/icon12.gif HFR
Good point. I find smug, Hill$ong Jesus to be a very annoying chap, and I expect him to offer me a timeshare plan on some beachfront place which only shows up at low tide.

Ok so this is a late addittion to an old thread but I'll add my 2c worth anyway.

That Hillsong billboard "Jesus is Love" used to just cause me mild ammusement everytime I drove past - now it irritates me in light of the recent bus ad issues. It's the biggest billboard I've ever seen, it's massive, hanging off the side of a road cutting.

How about a billboard next to it that says "Love a living human, it's more fun"

I'd love an image of it for Photoshopping purposes, but how about:
"Jesus is Rove"
Jesus vs Love".... I could go on.

I have a mate who lives in Castle Hill, so I pass through the Hillsong turf quite often. Can't recall if it's still up there, but one of their previous efforts was:

"I believe in you"
-God

Obviously they're paying by the word.
