I am a firm believer that religion is the root of all evil. Many many crimes against humanity have been done in the name of religion.
Many many failed "good things" have also been done in the name of religion.
I have been lucky enough that my parents didnt try and force religion down my throat, and let me make my own decisions once I was old enough to do so.
I think a major issue I have with religion is they brainwash em young or prey on the traumatised.
The essential underlying thing with most of them I suppose, other then the whole god/deity thing, is do to others as you would have them done to you. And this is fine.
The problem is that a few smart cookies have taken something, perverted in to a big power/money machine and used it for the own gains.
Why do people have to go to a church to prey to their deity? They never get an answer anyway (although I'm sure they will disagree) it is more brow beating to get people to believe.
Anyway, I'm from Melbourne, and am at the ripe old age of 30 :)
