Good question. David, it takes us girls 6 months to plan on what to wear for dinner - can you help us out with some guidelines?

Hey, you beat me to it! I was going to post this question today :)
I'm guessing it won't be full-on formal but nor will it be "me best jeans'n't-shirt" either ;)
I shall indeed be sourcing a new frock and naturally some new shoes (but who needs an excuse?!) - out of respect for the esteemed speakers of course :D

It's black tie and ball gowns.

Until I used Google I thought a ball gown had some resemblance to a ball bearing.

Depends on the media that might be there to greet me on the dread carpet. Melbourne, in March? Probably ill-fitting leather garments.

Good Folk,
Any or all of the suggestions so far look OK to me. That’s a very clever sign by Protium with the people bearing the Convention colours.
Santa is not suitable. G-strings musts be neat and hold in what they are supposed to.
Yes, I did look like Elvis when I was younger; I now look more like him as he is today. :D

I'm actually very disappointed - I do love a nice black tie/ballgown event :)
Still, I do hope that people respect the fact that it is a formal(ish) dinner and dress accordingly. I really hope not to see anyone in old jeans and a t-shirt and that people put some effort in.

Dude, we're paying A$100 to go to this dinner... Personally, I take that as an indication that it might just be a bit flash eh

But far more casual during the daytime lectures.

You win the approval of the ladies, Durro.
Dreading the thought of trudging around Brisbane in a fruitless effort to find something suitable to wear to such a grand shindig - I took the easy way out and bought my party rags online from the US. Quite excited, we don't get to scrub up too often out here in the sticks.

$100? Flash? I guess,if you emphasise 'a bit". (I'd say $100 a head is modest)
From what I've read, the organisers have done a first rate job of keeping costs as low as possible. (eg none of the speakers are being paid)
I would wear suit the whole time,no tie, polished shoes. (I would even iron the shirt, which would be red or black, rather than than my usual in-yer-face Hawaiian) Of course I would also wear my black Akubra, trim my beard neatly and clean my glasses with Windex..:D
The only jewelry I wear is a 1969 stainless steel Rolex.
Correction: Brisbane? Hot? In that in that case no jacket unless in air conditioning.

I really wanted to know what I should wear to the dinner. The present arrangement for me is that I shall be staying with a mate in Broadford, so what I wear on day of the dinner will be what I wear to the dinner. I not longer possess a suit. There is nowhere to wear one on the "Cold" Coast, so, at the age of 70, I can't justify the expense of one. I do have a lovely Yves Saint Laurent Camel Jacket that I bought in Melbourne about 28 years ago. It does not fit me now, unless I try to loose my pregant middle. I would choke in a tie. Last time I wore one was as an extra in a Hugh Jackman movie: "Paperback Hero" in 1998 and my agent loaned me that tie. I have a neat pair of trousers, some NASA T-Shirts and, if they come some Atheist Nexus T-Shirts and a NASA Flight Jacket (Very warm and comfortable).
Unless I am declared as Regimentally "Undressed" that is what I propose to wear to the dinner.

$100 might be average for you grown-ups, but when you're a scarfie, $20 is an extravagant dinner.
From what I've read, the organisers have done a first rate job of keeping costs as low as possible. (eg none of the speakers are being paid)
I definitely wasn't complaining about the cost! Just pointing out that it was unlikely to be a stubbies-and-jandals affair :P

I think if people simply dress as they would to go out to a nice restaurant for dinner that will be sufficient.
For others, they may wish to wear a suit or a nice evening-style cocktail dress or top (I'm not talking ball-gown here) and that would also be just fine.
As Jams said, probably best to steer away from stubbies and thongs.

And Pro, for goodness sake, organize a visit to the hairdresser on the afternoon prior. A wash, set and blow dry [yes, blowDRY] will do wonders for you, m'dear.

Nor do I (and have managed without one for 57 years).
The convention web site states (emphasis mine):Saturday Night Dinner Pass provides an opportunity for you to meet other convention attendees in a casual setting.
So, I'll be wearing something casual, but neat, which to me doesn't preclude jeans and my God Delusion T-shirt (http://store.richarddawkins.net/products/the-god-delusion-t-shirt). :)

Indeed, compared to her right hand, the weight of the ring on her left hand seems to be somewhat fatiguing.
