a devout Catholic, prayed to be saved after he was trapped in a lift – but was killed when he went to church to give thanks and the stone altar fell on him. It looks like he thought g-d would hold the alter in place. I guess that's what happens when you believe that g-ds are in control of everything.
I pity the people that believe such crap.

Nah, from reading the article it sounds like he hugged the altar ("he embraced the altar"), and that in doing so, the thing was destabilised an fell on him.

It would have been an unpleasant way to die, but at least it was quick.

Looks like God didn't like him very much. Or he did like him a lot so he took him to Heaven by hitting him with an altar.

He prayed that he would get out of the lift - and on thanking God - the God gave him his reward ;)
