View Full Version : Hey Everyone! I'm a Newbie from Tasmania

Hey
My name's Gazzy... I'm 26, live in Tasmania, work in a call centre. Pretty boring really...
I went to private schools right through to Year 12 and never really understood how my teachers and classmates and friends had this kind of blind faith in this religion stuff. Any questions I asked were quickly... ignored. I was always in trouble for "misbehaving" in class - this was only due to my not buying into their religious dribble.
So, anyway... I left school, came out (yeah, I'm gay), and that was that for awhile. Lately I have this interest in religion (of many types), not to convert, but to try to understand what words in these books are the ones that seem to brainwash people???
I don't understand it and I guess I never will... my religious friends say that I'm closed minded and that I couldn't understand because I'm faithless.
I consider myself an atheist, but, hey, if god or Jesus or Mohammad or any other religious figure head coming knocking on my door to tell me I'm wrong, well come on it, I'll put the kettle on. So I don't think I'm that close minded...
OK... This might be too much to write on my first post here, but as I get older (27 this December) I find myself thinking about life in general and the world we live in and what will be left behind when I leave it all behind. I'm not having children and I find myself needing some sort of meaning in my life.
I thinking religion has damaged, is damaging and will damage the Earth and the 6 billion + of us living on it unless something changes. The world is starting to fall apart... and science and reason and humanity is what is important and that is what I believe will heal the world and allow it to continue.
So I found myself here... I've been reading through these forums for a few hours and the majority of you (Fantasy Island aside) seem like rational, intelligent well educated people and, to be honest, I just wanted to be a part of it all and learn.
Gazzy.

If you're going to greet new members like that (it's not the first time you've done so), then fuck off yourself, and stay off the drugs (or get back on your medication).

I wonder how GazzyInTazzy will re-act when he reads the first response to his intoductory post?
I wouldn't blame him if he logged-out and never came back.

Heh!
For the record, it's only the second time.
Thank-you for being part of my secret, personal experiment, two-dogs.
What experiment, you arks?
Does "Fuck-off, nobody lilkes you!" still sound funny if I don't include a smiley face?
Obviously not.

Enjoy your stay. The island's good for short stays (unless you've got "a very simple question" to answer).

Welcome Gazzy. I hope you enjoy your stay. Don't worry about the troll under the bridge.
Mate.. please.. I know you meant it humorously but a stranger doesn't need a comment like this after an introductory post.
What Protium said, Gazzy ;-)

Hi Newbie from Tassie.
You are not alone in your study of religions....in fact, i reckon most declared atheists would have done more reading on numerous religions than the most devout types.
Welcome!

I guessed you wouldn't be "frightened" by anyone telling you to fuck off, but I thought you might decide to do without such infantile behaviour and go somewhere else.
Pleased to see you're still here.

@ Lapsed Atheist
You sling shit in all directions and when somebody calls you on it, you lapse into the old "only joking, no offense" routine. I stopped using that excuse when I was 14. How old are you?

Please relax.. this is sorted.
Group hug.
Yes, group grope!
Come on, mogie - I know you WANT to furgle me...
All is good in my corner of the world :)
BTW - did I tell you I was dying of cancer? Yeah, it sucks to be me.

WTF? Good grief LA. No you didn't tell us that! I am so sad to hear it.
I just teared up. damn. I don't know what to say. Sorry...
No biggie, Protium. The cancer tales were fair-dinkum. Fucking pancreas. Quite obviously, I haven't given a thought to quitting drinking, smoking, or being entirely stupid online. Oh, and for the record, despite my superficial allegiances to agnosticism, I'm not praying either. Except, to gravity.
"Dear Gravity,
It's been seventy-eleven years since I prayed. Please, keep me upright..."

LapsedAtheist,
BTW - did I tell you I was dying of cancer? Yeah, it sucks to be me. Your many thoughtful contributions to the Forum would support that you are being truthful. My commiserations mate. Such a disclosure is hard to answer, difficult to accept and reinforces the old adage that ‘life sucks and then you die’. It is your turn now and one day it will be ours. Yours is too early and ours a future guess.
No one can offer any word, phrase or advice as to how you are to handle such a final sentence; we can only be your friends in the dark hours surrounding such shit news.
There are no winners in death only the feelings of dread for the dying and anguish for loved ones left behind. We all become aware of living, taking each day for granted and then like some bad joke; life slips from our grasp.
But fuck it, we are alive right now, beating the immensity of odds against conception, the odds against being born and the odds of being healthy when that happens. We have won all the lotteries and the final one of individual consciousness gives no guarantee of an extended existence.
LA, these are only words moulded from frustration at the helplessness felt at your situation and I wish they could take away your pain. They will not but the words are from the inner part of humanity that connects us all.
I feel deeply for you and hope your final months coalesce into acceptance that coincidence of your circumstance allow for an end where all the loose ends, as much as they can, come together as best they can.
My thoughts and tears and the thoughts and tears of those who know you will be a part of a legacy not soon forgotten. I am deeply sorry.
David

Sorry, I didn't mean to bring this stuff here. This is not just 'stuff' of no consequence, LA, this is a part of your story and where better to let it out than on the Forum where you spend a good deal of your time. I'd reckon you should say exactly what you want...what is anyone going to do... kill you? :p

Hi Gazzy and welcome. I enjoyed reading your post - you're definitely on the right track and have worked it out at a fairly young(ish) age, so well done.
Hey LA - sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Seriously, it's suckful. I won't make with any cliches - you don't strike me as the type to need or appreciate them anyway ;) - it's just ... shitty and sad.
All the best.

No, but it WAS honest.:D (the back pedaling, not the joke, which was just a mean and rather pathetic case of projection)
