its mind boggling this website even exists.
mostly fundies taking the bible literally and try ever so hard to back it up with nothing more than assumptions.

I have actually heard about those people before - and when I first heard about the Flat Earth Society from a question in an examination - I thought it was just a joke or something used for the sake of the question - I had no idea that could even remotely exist!

I first heard a Flat-earther being interviewed on radio about 30 years ago. The flat-earther gave quite "serious" answers to all questions, but I assumed it was some sort of joke - like the people who will name a star in your honour for a small fee.

I still wonder if it started off as a joke, but attracted a number of loonies who actually believed the world was flat - and now they have usurped the original members who started the joke.

...or maybe they've all been serious all along!

Cyrus Reed Teed's Cellular Cosmogony is where it's at!

well he started it with the hollow earth theory, just working on the mathematics angle atm as he really failed in that regard ... I will get back to you when I have it resolved ...

The whole thing is completely bizarre. The theory is no better than Alien abductions.

To create various creative ideas just to suit the notion of a flat earth, hints of it being false, according to Ocham's Razor.

I thought it was a joke too. Surprisingly those guys at flat earth, are quite logical too, and are mostly atheist.

I must admit, that it is hard to imagine, sending someone to space, and we can never verify it ourselves, since we won't be gearing up in a space suit anytime soon. But it is harder to believe it a collaborative effort by all the leaders of the world, constantly fabricating satelite tech with more basic ones.

There are of course means of testing that the world is indeed round, such as used by early man like Columbus, but whose testing those out?

I reckon that some of the people there are simply there as a joke. I still think there must be someone who is there as a joke.

It seems to me that all the pictures of the Earth from space are 2 dimensions, its always seen on a computer screen or paper. It is all 2D
Maybe the reason is it is flat.
Holy Mother of God...

I spent some time on the "Flat Earth Forum" (is there more than one?) I was fairly sure most pf 'em were taking the piss, but could never tell which ones. When I tried a little piss taking I got jumped on from a great height.EG I mentioned the Thule Society.

Zeno of Elea would be so proud of those guys.

Thanks,I love bad puns

Translation; I lack the imagination to think of a witty riposte; "more fool them" doesn't quite cut it.:D.

The goons at SomethingAwful.com have featured the Flat Earth Society forums in their Weekend Web segment (http://www.somethingawful.com/d/weekend-web/flat-earth-society.php).

I've just spent some time at the Flat Earth Society forum - I feel spooked - theres a moderator there with many many posts to his name, refuting almost all of modern science, from the atom to relativity.

Yes - conspiracy theories seem to dominate the minds of such people. I don't know what drives that kind of attitude.

Yes - conspiracies are committed in the real world regularly, but I don't think that conspiracies are easy to maintain - especially so if the number of people involved becomes large.

Theres an excellent quote about the improbability of conspiracy theories:

"Three people can keep a secret, as long as two of them are dead".

I get the impression that literal reading of holy books also informs these Flat Earthers. Beyond that, no idea.

I am 100% convinced the planet is round - the sources of evidence are many-fold, from the day-to-day functioning of GPS units to the obvious way that the bottom of large ships in the distant horizon disappears, to the large number of photos taken from orbit. Sheesh, I don't know where to start!

ARGH, the stupid, it burns!

Are we going to have a Tetrahedral Earth Society next? How about a Undecahedral Earth Society?

At least we'll never have a hollow earth theory...

Well now that would be stupid considering the statistics showing the density of the Earth to be large. Maybe a Cylindrical Earth Society and Cubical Earth Society?

Been done: it should be all over Google. Start here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollow_Earth) (contains traces of Hitler).

Alaska is a lie, you've never been there nor seen it before either have you?

Day light hours are the same.

If you go to the north from one part of the world, and end up in the next part of the world, that is due to artic teleportation. All provable with science.

I caught up with a friend last night and was chatting with them about what we're doing at work at the moment (I work for a telecommunications infrastructure company). And was telling him about this big-arse tower we're building and why it had to be so tall -- for Fresnel zone clearance. I then told him about the Flat Earth society and how they would argue against this...

He thought I was kidding that the FES exist... :P

I checked them out and I'm not convinced that they're actually serious.
Seems like another religion parody to me. I could be wrong and they might be deadly serious. Maybe I just can't fathom the depths of that kind of stupidity and assume it's all a "wink, wink, nod, nod" kind of joke.
