Ok, this is waaay off topic but I am in two minds about something.
My partner and I have 2 young cats (14 months old), they are sisters we have raised since they were a week old (they were abandoned at my work). Names are Smokey and Bandit.
They were both spayed a few weeks back and had their stitches removed everything was ok until last night... somehow Bandit has hurt herself or something (they are very active still) and resulted with a mini hernia where the surgery was.
We are taking her back tomorrow for corrective surgery. my partner wants to keep Smokey with her as they are pretty inseperable, but I think it is unfair for Smokey to be locked up all day at the vet, sometimes alone while Bandit is having an op and might get stressed if she is under anesthetic when returned to the cage.
My partner is worried that Bandit will be stressed being alone and possibly in pain at the vet by herself, thus Smokey will be at home alone too confused.
Silly topic I know but they are like our kids a bit given we hand raised them from so little and they weren't expected to live past a few weeks.
First kitten fed is Smokey, Second is Bandit (4 hourly feeding times lol)

Just a question, why do some people warn everyone before posting on the off-topic section that the topic they are posting is off-topic? Isn't the whole point of this section to post stuff unrelated to religion and atheism, or am I missing something here?

Sorry, but don't you feel slightly guilty about paying for surgery on a cat when billions of people will never have access to similar quality medical attention?
Not a cat person.

Sorry, I hadn't noticed to be honest... firt time I have created a thread here I think! he he

They are too young to make that decision atm!

Not a cat person.
What are you suggesting? That I let the person who dumped them at work at just on 1 week of age kill them as he was planning on doing if I hadn't taken them off his hands? That given they were too young to fend or care for themselves that I would abandon them too. That if any pet anyone owns (or other animals) are not worthy compared to humans for medical treatment? That I comb the streets trying to find people who I can give money too instead of treating what I consider now to be part of my family? Would you feel differently if it was a dog, or some other animal you happen to like... assuming you like animals at all.
In some ways animals are better than people are. If this country or planet is fucked up in their approach to national health and medical treatment to its people don't get up my nose, go after the decision makers of this and other countries.
Please correct me if I missed the joke all together but that was the most stupidest f'ing thing I think I have read in a while this side of fantasy island. If you don't like cats then don't bother replying maybe unless you have something relevant to say FFS. No I am far from guilty, in fact not the slightest amount of guilt is in my mind.
Sorry for losing my cool AFA but I'm not that tolerant of ignorance.
If this is a joke then... umm... ahh yeah.
Never mind the original concern/question sparking this thread... I'm sure we'll work it out... thanks.

If you are wondering if Bandit will be too stressed at the vet's I never really thought about it. Chances are he will be too out of it on drugs to notice.
We had two cats (Little Catty and Tyson), and LC had to get an abyss(?) removed. Tyson thought it was the best two days of his life, all the attention he got.
They should be fine :)

Thanks GB, well these girls are spoilt but they seem to get over a visit to the vet pretty well :)
I was more wondering wether to leave Smokey at home (she has never been apart from Bandit) or keep her with bandit for both their company at the vet while we're at work, even though Smokey doesn't need any treatment.
Thanks again.

We've had this situation - very similar indeed. Honestly, they cope. A day or so without their best buddy does them no harm at all. Don't waste the $$ on having an extra cat there when you don't need to. Believe me, the vet bill will be high enough as it is!
Wait until one of them dies - it's a terrible thing to see a cat mourn  When our beloved Monty died (about 14 months ago now), we waited three weeks then couldn't bear seeing how much Loki was grieving so we got two new cats as companions. One worked out (she's still with us and they are in lerrrrrv in a big way) but the other one was a total disaster so we gave him to Mum, where he now rules her house in style.
But I digress! Stress less about a day or two (Loki was once in for four days with a catheter, etc). Cats cope better than you think.
Cheers.

Thanks Praxis, you put my mind at ease a bit as yeah I was leaning more towards splitting them up for the day too.
Well, I have had my cup of tea so it is time to bundle her up and off to the vet we go he he.
Thanks :)

Good question. As soon as they are old enough to understand,(say at 6 months) it might be wise to explain that both ceiling cat and basement cat are myths.
I'd just like to add that cats lovers are strange. My Sis is one,and now has only two Abyssinians.. (the obnoxious Siamese finally died. It was 19 and used to swear at me) If you say anything unkind about the cats you will be asked to leave, for hurting their feelings.
Fortunately she also has two dogs, a Scots collie and a Chihuahua. (she has no sense of proportion)

My feeling is to separate them for the vet visit, but the best course of action would be to (ring and) ask the vet his/her opinion on whether or not to leave the other kitten at home.

Edit: Ah. Just noticed you'd already decided to separate them. Probably a good decision.

Well, all went well... Bandit is groggy and sore but she is just sleeping it off... I think Smokey had a wild party here on her own all day as our kitchen bin was on its side and toys strewn across the floor.
Nurse on call (my mother) is going to pop around tomorrow to see the patient while we're at work.
Thanks for the replies.

The only reason cats don't eat us is because they can't ;)
