With the 2012 Global Atheist Convention only one month away, the AFA is again advertising on public transport in Melbourne.

Using a provocative quote by Woody Allen, “IF GOD EXISTS, I HOPE HE HAS A GOOD EXCUSE”, the intention is to inform people who otherwise might not know about the convention, that it is going on and that it is going to be an absolutely fantastic and unrepeatable experience not to be missed.

David Nicholls, president of the Atheist Foundation of Australia, had this to say about the adverts: “Woody Allen’s words encapsulate the thoughts of the freethinking community and the sneaking suspicions of a growing number of religious people as well. Considering the immensity of the unnecessary death, pain and suffering on the planet, an alleged all-powerful and all-loving god certainly has a lot to answer for.”

The 2012 Global Atheist Convention runs from Friday 13 April (superstitious people need not apply) to Sunday 15 April. It is jam-packed with some of the brightest minds of our time as well as great comedic acts and a liberal dose of other exciting presentations. Top class catering is included in the price of a ticket.

Nicholls went on to say, “As far as all evidence to date suggests, the universe runs on natural laws with planet Earth just an insignificant speck in an unimaginably enormous cosmos. A god certainly needs to explain why, with such a mind-blowingly complicated system that can be understood using reason, reason should be dismissed in human affairs in favour of accepting answers based in delusion.”

I was driving behind a bus in Hobart yesterday when I saw an advertisement from the "Grace Church" at hobart.org.au. I wasn't actually sure it was religious at first. Too naive, I guess. But it had a web link.

I found the very same sign on their web site (http://www.hobart.org.au). So, the Hobart buses do now carry religious advertisements. Wasn't there some dispute about that a while back?

This is a P.S.

Out of curiosity, I did an image search to locate the original photograph used in their advert. It's from a commercial photographer here (http://www.stuharris.com).

There was, about atheist advertisements, rather than religious ones, but see here (http://atheistfoundation.org.au/media-release/atheist-signs-to-go-on-tasmanian-buses/) and here (http://atheistfoundation.org.au/media-release/all-aboard-tasmanian-buses/).

Very good.

Here's the image they should have used. Same photographer, same woman, but this one's more ambiguous.

Actually, I answered my own question when I searched for the image. When I did, this image came up.

The Hobart buses now carry political advertising. If they do that, I can't see why there should be any more obstruction.

Indeed; the AFA Press Releases I linked to show that the AFA's dispute with Metro buses in Tasmania was settled in August 2009, and the advertisements first appeared in January 2010.

Great way to campaign! But it should be at more public places including train stations. I use Melbourne public transport a lot but haven't seen the ads so far. Hope to see one soon!!
