This here saloon is for the spectators, drunks and hangers-on to down a whiskey, play some cards and enjoy the show. The cowboys, saloon girls and cattle rustlers playing the game can come in here for a drink, too, but please, leave your game-playing spurs and guns at the door....

The game will start shortly.

Are we supposed to post in character and use the names which have been supplied for us or is working that out part of the game too? I got "you are <insert name here>", just don't know if everyone else should know as well.

Please let me know kind GM's.

If we're supposed to use our game names and characters then can everyone introduce themselves please?

Bolero
2nd March 2012, 10:12 AM
As I have (repeatedly repeatedly) advised, revealing your character name at this early stage of the game is a bad idea, as character identification can lead to figuring out roles.

It is USUALLY ONLY ADVANTAGEOUS TO SCUM to have a mass role/character claiming so early in the game.

Bolero
2nd March 2012, 10:21 AM
There are two main reasons character claiming is advantageous to scum:

1. They can use flavour to determine roles (eg detective, doc)
2. If town players lie about their character to prevent #1 happening, they will not be trusted later in the game. Scum are the only ones who have a reason to lie, and if they force town players to lie about who they are ("Oh, I was lying - I'm really the doctor!"), it draws suspicion away from scum and onto town specials.

My advice: DO NOT REVEAL YOUR CHARACTER.

But it's your game - do whatever you want. :D

Thanks. Wish I'd known before.
Not to be pedantic or anything (although gods are generally known for it...), but:

From the signup thread
I should also mention that because this is a flavoured game, players will receive in their role PM:

Their character and their role.

E.g.

You are Dan "The Cowboy" McGee, a small time ranch owner, and you are vanilla town.

or

You are Jenny Pistolshot, the daughter of the Saloon owner, and you are the town vigilante.

(Not necessarily actual charatcers or roles in this game)

It will be unwise to reveal either your character or your role, as either could lead to you getting killed. The last game, we just had roles, not characters. In a heavily flavoured game, characters can give away a lot of information about what might be any special powers you have or whether or not you're a scumbag, so try to keep this info to yourself... at least at the start.

When we get more into it, role and character become kind of interchangeable terms, but just for now, be aware that who you are and what you can do are really only for you to know until you figure out who to trust.

From the Day 1 OP:

Remember: Be very very careful who you reveal your character/role to...trust no-one!

You done been told..... ;)

In this game, names are safe. If you are worried about it, choose a name which is unrelated to any potential role, and stick with it privately and publicly until you are dead.

I say should, as I tested these from Tapatalk on an iPhone, on the Test Posting Area of the Tapatalk Support Forums, and while the posts appeared as expected when viewed via a web browser, the results weren't as expected when viewed using the iPhone/iPad Tapatalk clients. [color=] had no effect, and only the innermost of nested attributes had an effect. In the second example above, it only appeared bolded on an iDevice.

Another solution to the phone problem is to open a browser on the phone for this specific thread, and have all normal browser facilities available. I suggest Atomic as a reasonable alternative to Safari if you are using an iPhone.

wolty: excrementian - rhymes with cambrian
Annie: We analyzed the atmosphere and found it contained small traces of material which were confirmed to be portions of vegetation from behind the very musical church on the hill. However it could have been a rhinoceros which was playing around with an industrial air compressor. We have yet to determine whether the gas was from a human or a rhinoceros which swallowed compressed air.

Loki

It would have been interesting to see how a lover affected the dynamics if I hadn't been randomed Threat. As far as I could see it was an advantage for me as I could meet my win condition (scum parity with town) without you dying but you could not (all scum dead). Taking me out was a win for town but not as big a win as taking out another scum. Would have been interesting once a few less players were involved.

I'm assuming I was a random Davo? If not I'd really like to hear your reasoning. Same with gruber really.

Voltairine
6th March 2012, 11:31 AM
Xeno, obviously I wasn't going to vote for Dilby. Although on the surface it might have looking like I didn't know what my role was, beneath the surface I was paddled like crazy. Couldn't for the life of me get Dilby and SB on side. Even left a "final" PM last night to the pair of them to get their shit together if I didn't make it. :o

As for Davo being the vigilante. At first I thought I was, but stuff happened behind the scenes that made me doubt him. He knew he was doing some killing, but not as the vigilant - as a highly devious Don. Sorry for thinking too well of you Davo. ;)

Nicely played Cyclist. Had you as a killer. But a quiet SK.

Threat
6th March 2012, 11:40 AM
@Loki: Could I have tried to protect you as the last scum? Would just the Lovers left mean they won? Or would that be one team or the other winning?

I was thinking that you were probably scum Loki, only going on you voting with Praxis, Cyclist and me (and I knew I was town)... I thought we may be able to off eveyone else and win as Lovers... but it would be a challenge, but then I thought we'd have more time, you were offed that night!

I was actually voting with you as I'd twigged to your role, an apparent bandwagon with Praxis and Cylist only became obvious to me later, by which stage I could only hope others didn't make something of it. Having to redo that vote after the great vote list fiasco just made it look even more of a bandwagon. Still, getting the sheriff lynched on the first day was too good to be true and a risk worth taking.

Explanation of star crosses lovers win conditions by a GM over at table 5 please, and a couple of schooners thanks.

First up, thanks to Bol and Xeno for a well run game.

Early on Sunday, when I found myself all alone of the scum, I set a target of keeping the game running till Tuesday morning. Really glad that I made it.

Thanks to davo for his non-stop paranoia, it helped clean out a couple of townies on Sunday and Monday night. I didn't target you as you were keeping the pot stirring, it was useful to me to keep you alive. I knew that I would be hardpressed to win, I just wanted to go as long as I could.

As scum, we stuffed up early. I know where we went wrong, but I'm going to keep my cards close to my chest for the next time I get a go at being scum.

Thanks to everyone who felt that I did a good job. I must admit that I only got into the swing of it on Sunday, and I think that was due to desperation more than anything else.

Additional:

I'd be curious on scum from the first game, but I found playing scum to be quite hard. As Protium said to Praxis on Day 2, she knew too much. You have to play dumb in the public forum, and to a degree sow discontent. My kills may have seemed random, but it was as much about targeting someone to cast the suspicion on someone else. Hence my target of LP last night.

I was actually quite proud that LBA was lynched last night. I put the initial vote in there, and a couple of possibles and maybes, and davo with his confirmation bias then just went nuts.

The hardest thing which I found, was trying to fabricate evidence. You have to convince others that someone who you know is innocent, is guilty. All the while trying to stay above board yourself.

@Loki re lovers
It is a double win, like a team prize and an individual prize. If you, Loki, were the last scum killed then you and Threat win the Pairs Loving prize while Threat wins the Team prize. Correspondingly if Town lost but you keep Threat alive to that point then again you both win the Pairs but scum win the Teams.

An interesting wrinkle where the lovers are star crossed would be to give the town lover a role, perhaps SK, finishes with a murder-suicide.

I promise not to do that next game. :)

I am hearing a few calls for another simple game, without roles. I am happy to run one of that nature alone. I confess though that doing the names and character roles, rather than game/special roles, is part of the fun on the GM side. Bol did half of the names and I did the other half. We missed out on disclosing aliases Mordecai Fitzmangle and Albert Bierstein (who was not Wolty).

Offering a vanilla game, I intend few special roles and a focus on strategy.
