View Full Version : 01-Vanilla Town Day 5 Mafia/Endgame

Bolero

It is the end of the road for Vanilla Town.

Just before sunrise, Mayor Rogerb is on the verge of killing himself when a shot rings out in the chilly pre-dawn, and he drops dead on his patio, hara-kiri knife in hand.

Rogerb was vanilla town.

Thinking well of himself for getting rid of someone he thought scummy as hell (although, aren’t all politicians?), and unaware yet of either the mayor’s innocence or his own impending doom, loubert runs from the scene, stashing his rifle under a bush by the side of the road. As he crosses the park, a gun-toting mafioso appears in front of him…he turns to run back the way he’s come, when the Don steps out to block his escape. "It's...it's YOU!" he cries in shock. At a nod from the Don, the trigger-happy scumbag mows down loubert, chuckling sadistically.

Loubert was the town vigilante.

The only people left in Vanilla Town are the two mafia and one unfortunate, soon-to-be-dead citizen.

Threat is The Don.

Loki is vanilla town….run, Lok, run for your life!!!

Scum win!

Congratulations LBA, Threat and Protium on a well-deserved win.
All players – alive or dead – and spectators are invited to post in this thread to congratulate the winners and conduct postgame autopsy, if you wish. :D

This is a PM I got from wolty on Day 2:

"Those bastards tried to kill me!!!!

I think they know, I know who they are. They can see I waited and wrongly voted for davo and not Protes and now they are out to get me because they think I have worked it out. Doubt I will last another night but will endeavour to take a few with me. :D

So from my reading, there are at least two and maybe three that voted for davo that are scum, namely LBA, gruber, Protes and Threat. If it is only two of those, there will be another lurking around outside of those. a sleeper if you will.

I think Threat, LBA and Protes.

My options.

1. Keep quiet, die and achieve nothing.
2. Tell everyone I am the doctor and I saw the writing on the wall and saved myself. Let them know if I die and it is revealed that I was vanilla, that I think it is at least 2 or 3 of the original 4 but they need to take them all out at the same time to protect themselves and keep in mind there may be another.
3. Take a chance and PM rogerb letting him know that I am the doctor, hope he is not scum, and tell him all I think. I may have to do this.

I am such a realist. :) And very very pragmatic it would seem. :D

Will wait for the vote a bit, but I can see, even if the vote goes for Protes, they will kill me tonight anyway. :D

I could try and trust rogerb and Dilby but I don't know as I do think there may be another lurking about outside the 4 that voted for davo. I think Loki and Prax and loubert are on the money at this stage.

Or I could be completely wrong and full of shit. You can tell me how I did after I am dead. Or at the end.
No need to respond.
:)"

Shit! I formed an alliance with the vigilante? Well at least loubert knows I'm honest and even vigilante's have a conscience.

Knew LBA was scum from the moment I PM'd her and had to wait 24+ hours for a response which, when forthcoming was as lame as a creationist's explanation for fossils :p

Well played everyone. Thanks Bol, that was great. You did very well.

SO glad the AFA forum finally got over its suspicion about this game (why it took 2 years will forever remain a mystery) and everyone can now see what a buzz it is

I really look forward to the next game - with a theme.

PS: Bol, why was Prote allowed on our whiteboard when scum had their own?

And loubert, seriosly, go do some target practice! :p:D

In fairness to loubert, it is evident from reading the Zombieboard that most people thought gruber was scummy, too, and then after yesterday, people were positive Rogerb was, too. So lou didn't do a bad job - the scumbags just played really well - especially that coup with getting Volts lynched yesterday.

Absolutely not, sorry loubert was only kidding.:o:) I can't imagine how the scum could have performed any better, especially considering they were down a player for much of it. Yes, last nights play was a cracker, had me absolutely convinced rogerb was scum! Yes, gruber painted a big fat target on his back, I would have done him in if given the chance! ;)

EDIT: Baha, that mafia writeboard is fantastic! Good to see they were nearly as confused as we were! I can't wait for the next game, I wonder how this experience will effect everyones playing styles, if at all.

Well playrd scum, Loki sneaks out of town under a pile of garbage, spends 3 months on the run, changes his name but eventually ends up running a brothel in Mint-Chip Town.

I had LBA pegged as scum, it doesn't pay to lie or contradict yourself in this game, still scratching my head as to how LBA so easily confused Rogerb.

I knew Loubert was either scum or SK, again it doesn't pay to contradict yourself.

Hadn't pegged Threat, but had Volt tagged as town, was planning on worrying about the last scum after those two (wasn't sure how many scum/SK were left.

I'd really like to know how scum locked on to Wolty so quickly.

Same question about Dilby, though he might have PM'd the wrong person.

Bolero
21st February 2012, 05:28 AM
I think it was Threat who really did a number on Rogerb. And again, pretty much no-one was suss of Threat by endgame, and he sounded pretty convincing, so not surprising.

Yeah, I know - it's hilarious. I chuckled so much reading that.

Everyone will be better at it next time, and more onto dodgy behaviour. Loki's quite right - it doesn't pay to contradict yourself openly. LYNCH ALL LIARS, as they say.

It was threat, I just couldnt believe he was scum.

My (all too hasty) last minute Change was based on a numbers thing. I thought Loubert & volt were scum & would change to threat at the last minute. By the time I regretted, it was too late to change on this bloody slow iPhone!

So, it seems my logic was fatally flawed... Loubert & I were both played beautifully.

The only comment I'd make on my defense, is WHY the deceptive / mysterious stuff from townies? It made it all the more confusing... I'm especially you Gruber!!

Cheers all, that was fun!!!

Oi! Nobody likes smug scum ;)

Rogerb, you played a magnificent game I must say. Although how you couldn't hear the howls when you all started switching from LBA to Voltairine is incredible (seriously, I was screaming at the screen: NOOOOOO!!! You IDIOT! [sorry]. You had her in the bag (everyone had her pegged as scum very early on) and you let her go by actually believing someone who came in late and played a very suss "I don't quite know what's going on" game

I love how you threw yourself into your role. That sort of thing makes Mafia even more fun. Well done.

Also, next time, if you want to enter into an alliance with someone, PM them. I nearly PM'd you after you reached out (publicly) but by then I was starting to be a bit suss on you so I didn't and I didn't want to raise more suspicion by saying why I would or wouldn't align with you in public. Public reaching out/alliance lets everyone see who's up to what and even we innocents have to play some cards close to our chests ;)

Thanks for the explanation of the writeboards, Bol

Rome, politics in the Senate? Make speeches, have orgies, eat grapes and knife people or throw them to the lions.

Mutiny on the Bounty? Elect a Bligh, Fletcher Christian is The Don. Toss victims overboard or hang them from the mast.

Atheists and televangelists should work, except I am not sure what imaginative death methods we would use, and how the atheists have character roles.

In the theme, we need to pick something that allows character roles for people to adopt, some intrigue, and some expected disposal methods.

@Praxis re Bounty: it did not seem to stop Hollywood putting a few there ;) and what about nubile Fijian maidens?

I stayed away from OzPol because it seemed a little too topical but I think that would work. As a form of death, people could be removed from their seats by vote for supposed misconduct, or simply killed off at night. It should definitely have Rogerb's suggested name (http://www.atheistfoundation.org.au/forums/showpost.php?p=273627&postcount=38) for it :)

I just have this thing with strangling cute fluffy animals, It's putting the Mafia scenario into a situation where it doesn't naturally fit, would make it interesting and challenging for people to try and keep in character while also being a paranoid yet ruthless bastard.

@Loubert, we are never going hunting together. :D

As for the voting for myself thing.
I realised after the second night when they tried to kill me, the writing was on the wall. I maybe mistakenly thought that the scum knew the rule that I couldn't save myself two nights running, so was convinced I was going to die.

But I was determined to make a bit of a difference during the day by reaching out to Dilby and rogerb. Dilby was a little keen, rogerb said to me 'nice try'.
I knew it would have been a bonus to scum during that day if I died, I had to keep myself alive and hope that a scum would get voted.

The vote started to go towards who I thought were townies. So I wanted to throw a cat out there, put me in the firing line and hope some changed their votes. And keep myself alive and hope I didn't die during the night.

Rogerb voting for me at the beginning sealed me to die as at least 2 scum hadn't voted at that stage and the numbers were bad for me. I told him if I died and turned out to be a townie and he had voted for me, it would look bad for him. This was when I started to think rogerb could be a scum, had played the game before or was just really good at it. I thought this to the end.

But I did have something, if I could get a scum towards the top with me, I then had a 2 vote turnaround when I changed mine. Scum would die.

But the bloody townies all voted wrong, Prax got nailed to the wall and I knew at that stage we were in trouble because no-one seemed to have any idea except me and I was going to die.

I think I got through to Dilby, but not rogerb who still seemed to be in the wrong area.

I also knew I was going to die when Protes rang me on the phone that night to pump me for info. :D

Keep in mind with the not being able to save the same person twice in a row that each game is different. That was my stipulation for that role for that game. Different GMs do different things... although docs often have that restriction, because otherwise they'd just protect themselves till they figured out who the detective was and then just protect them night after night.

wolty, Me, I am awesome!!
Rogerb, Oh roger, you almost convinced me you were scum.
Threat, The disappearing act was brilliant.
Lord Blackadder, picked early but wouldn't die.
Voltarine, was always suspected of being a SK, unfortunately.
Podblack, died an early and glorious death!! Maybe too early to pick things.
dilbadoon, was working it out.
gruber, confused everyone, especially townies. Well done.
Protium, enjoyed this a little too much methinks. :D
davo, poor davo sacrificed for the greater good, and we still lost.
Loki, under the radar and also worked it out.
Praxis, is better at it than she thinks.

Seeing as we're all feeling pretty happy about the mafia thing, and thinking of doing more games, can I make a little suggestion?

Basically, although forums usually have their own mafia conventions, it's up to the individual GM how they want to conduct their game. Too many forum rules on how games must be done can ruin the suspense and intrigue... Plus punters like variety, and GMs like having their own style. So my advice is that we don't formalise it too much in terms of "rules". Just standard stuff like no gameplay in threads other than the game thread, no zombietalk in the game thread, and no editing or deleting of posts. Let most everything else just happen on a game-by-game basis, depending on the whim of the GM, and we'll soon figure out what works and what doesn't.

Fluffy bunnies is a nice idea and would give a reasonably vanilla game given I am not sure everyone has read Watership Down. Well, I haven't, but then I do not matter.

Greek gods works for me. So does Sound of Music. :)

We would like some more people next game, say 15-20? We will not toss in too many roles, despite my devious suggestions to Bolero in PM . We could target this Friday to start, maybe 13/14 hour days and 11/10 hour nights correspondingly.

We are also considering using a gmail address for night actions or any comments to GMs, to save temptation to watch for PM action during the night.

Question for all: I see above discussion of whether you can have consecutive blocks or protects and so on, and questions arose in the game about whether a possible SK could be scum. Would you like all local rules to be explicit at the start of the game? As Bol noted above, they can and probably will be varied from game to game.

My view is it should be so. Uncertainty should arise from the game, not from the rule base. Views please.

It's much much better if no one has any fucking idea what's going on, IMO. If I'd told you all who all the roles were, and what their conditions or restrictions were, it would have been a much easier, much more boring game.

The only important rules are the three I mentioned above, and the ones that apply to your own role. Everything else, you work out as you go.

Darn it! Scum thought I was the SK but I never got to kill anyone... well other than the screw-up on Day 2, which really was a technology glitch.

I didn't initially sign up as it's something I've not come across before and wanted to see what it was about first. I'm sure others were the same. Now the ice has been broken, I think more folks will be willing to sign up for the next Mafia Game, or similar. Personally, I like a good murder. :D

You know what would be really cool but I think won't happen as it would be more work in the future for mods and Mr Protes.

If we had user names specifically for mafia games.

Imagine this, people here register as Greek god names, go into mafia unknown and play the game. All is revealed at the end. So you find out not only town/scum but who the real user is as well.

Sorry daydreaming, I used to love cluedo. :D

That's an interesting observation for other reasons as well. Some people join fora just to play Mafia. I still occasionally run across posters on other fora I'm totally unfamiliar with who have thousands of posts. They are either old members who have been away for a while or Mafia posters who occasionally visit the boards. Dedicated Mafia socks would separate Mafia posting from general posting. There would be a con though, can one be logged in under two usernames from a single machine at the same time?

@Bol, as I suggested in the PM this morning, my solution to that is to have more roles defined than assigned, and to select the latter randomly. Behaviour characteristics of possible roles then give people some basis on which to detect, rather than vaguely not knowing. It looked to me in the previous game that the people with understood roles, hence some knowledge at least of their own rules, were most engaged.

How about we do a vanilla one while I assist to learn the processes, then I will try one of my designs on people

of course not I had no other reason than you're smart and wanted to spice my reason up a bit :)

Definitely :) the game works on all levels :)

Those scum are devious ;)

Oh, no, Volts. I am much too devious for that. Even my deviations are deviant.

Are we closer to picking a scenario or will I throw up a poll for it this evening from the ones mentioned?

Poll sounds good as it will let others have a say.

I agree, but my 2c is I would prefer to keep to a more simple theme since it is only our second game. Something like Shakespeare or ancient Greece may be a little taxing, I found there was so much going on already that I don't know if I could keep up with a super involved theme as well. That's just me, clearly some have picked this up quicker than others, but I like the idea of easing into it, especially if we will be adding more characters. :)

I also think it would be good if we could have a sub-forum dedicated to mafia, it would make it much easier to shuffle through the previous days when looking for votes, comments etc.

It's possible but only if you have two or more browsers installed, I do this with a forum that I run where I have my own login and the Admin login.

James

Edit: You can also put a browser into Privacy Mode (Firefox and Chrome do this) which would preserve your main login, but you'd have to login each time for the Mafia login.

So many things (I laughed a few times looking at the Scum board) - but I'll have to bow out of the next game if it's being played end of Feb / early March? I'll be on the road and won't be able to give it fair attention (mind, I clearly wasn't giving it fair attention this time as I was still working it out / dopily got myself killed early on!).

Yes to bunnies, My Little Ponies, Shakespeare, Atheist vs Tele-evangelists and ninjas vs pirates. :D

I did not think that was luck. I thought Wolty spilled the beans on day 1, from reading the zombie board, hence his need to protect himself immediately. Is that so?

Ah, ok. Got it now. Was off on a tangent before.

I couldn't look at the zombie board until after I was killed.

I reasoned it this way.
After davo got it and I thought of the scum voting for him, I knew there were only 2 or maybe 3 of us townies that had voted for him. I reasoned that they would notice I waited until the last minute to vote for either davo or protes and I would realise I had made a mistake and should have voted for Protes. I saved myself the first night when they tried to kill me.

I would have tried to kill me too, it's what I would have done.

Maybe got the correct answer for the wrong reasons but it's what happened. :p:D

Seems they were more worried about mods than others to start with.

:) I thnk Protium answered earlier. I was asking about what beans you spilled (actually or inadvertently) not those you deduced.

It was most unlikely to be by chance that they were so keen to target you on the first night.

Protes "Hey Wolty how are ya mate, Long time no speak?"
Wolty "Protes, how the fuck are you?"
Protes "I'm fair to middling mate. Hey you're playing the Doctor well, really hard to tell!"
Wolty "How did you know I was the Doctor?"
Protes "You just told me"

:)

Facts may have been modified for theatrical effect.

And then.....

Annie - Hiya Buddy. How the hell are you?
Protes - Yeah Good mate. Whoddathunk Wolty was the Doctor?
Annie - What makes you think he is the Doctor?
Protes - I dunno, I just got this feeling.......

:)
