More directed towards overseas attendees I guess.
Do not have my tickets confirmed yet. But since I want to do a lot of sightseeing I will hopefully arrive there on the 5th of April. I was thinking, if there are a couple of people all in Melbourne 1 week before the event why not plan something as a group?

I arrived in Melbourne in October 1963 :D Sorry.
We've got a concert in town on the 12th, otherwise I would have caught up with people on the Thursday night but it isn't to be so I'll be around from about lunchtime on the Friday which won't leave any time for much else other than the GAC unfortunately.
Er, not that that's a bad thing you understand!

Aussies can arrive a day before the event and leave when it is over, but maybe a few of the overseas attendees would want to stay longer and explore Australia hence my assumption that some may be arriving a week early before the event.
On second thoughts perhaps I am arriving a bit too early. Got nothing to do during the week prior to the event.

There is a LOT to do in Melbourne, you can spend a whole day in the museum alone! Half a day in the aquarium. Have a google about things to do in Melbourne. You won't regret coming early.

Looking at the average, say around $350, or $375-385 with a champagne breakfast (which I'm not really interested in). One place has a weekday special at $310, breakfast upgrade for $40.

You'll be right. The Sky Bus from the airport runs pretty frequently. Just get to your accommodation, chuck your stuff down and head to the Centre. IIRC there's sort of mingling, drinking and generally lots of squealing in excitement before the actual program commences so you'll have a bit of time.

I really don't want to miss the drinking and squealing!
I am TERRIFIED of flying and would normally not even consider it as a transport option, however my excitement about the GAC has superseded my fear of flying.....temporarily. I may still have to Phenergan myself to within an inch of my life to get on the plane, which will make drinking a very bad idea so probably good we won't get there in time for it!

I went there in 2010, seemed Ok to me. But it was a HOT day, and in my relief in getting cool, I probably did not look that critically. I thought the King/Emperor Pengy enclosure was a bit small though.

Going to see the penguins on the island? It's gonna be bloody cold, so take warm jackets. All the Melbourne people I know tend to just drive down if they want to go, but there are lots of tour companies that go there. Don't forget the seals are there too if you have time.
I went to the aquarium not long ago and it was pretty good, but it gets really crowded. The penguins are in a very small enclosure, glass fronted so you are really close.

I want Wolty to see them do the long walk from the sea to their little burrows with their chicks waiting at the front door. :). I went down there with a tour operator two years ago and yes it was freezing! I will appropriately dress for Antarctica this time. The tour stopped at several places including a winery :D before San Remo, the PI chocolate factory, the Nobbies and finished with the penguin parade arriving home at around 10pm. From memory it was less than $130 and seemed good value for a whole day tour being collected and returned to my hotel. The company was 'western' something. Like DBD I will try to find out who they were.

Yes yes! You're a star Volt! It was a van or mini bus which seated around 14. It was really nice. Not too big. I was with a group of about 10 friends and it was a great day out.
I forgot to mention the koala park. That was great. We used to go on holidays to PI when I was a kid and the current koala's great great great grand parents only had two narrow strips of trees alongside a very busy road to live in. Their ancestors are much better off now. I was very impressed. :)

Well the GAC is a month away, perhaps we should start thinking of filling in time slots? This is the program:
Friday 13 April
1700 - 2135: Opening
Saturday 14 April
0830 - 1745: Convention
1900 - 2300: Gala dinner
Sunday 15 April
0845 - 1600: Convention
This leaves Fri AM and Sunday evening free (+ other days of course if you are around). I can guess that there will be various gatherings on Sunday evening, but we could all meet for lunch on Friday. If there are many of us, we could book out a venue - but we would need to give notice right now because most restaurants don't like massive groups turning up. They can't seat everyone.

Well it certainly seems familiar. I think I've experienced this before. Minus the Dave Mabus if I remember.

What about Friday morning? May I suggest a breakfast meet up.
Sounds like a good idea. I'd probably attend, dependent on what time it was held, and how much I'd had to drink the night before. ;)
Perhaps you could start a thread in Social Happenings, so that it doesn't get lost here?

I made one for myself last time and for several others. Probably won't have time to do that again though although may make one for myself.
Amazingly, people manage to find each other though

The lanyards didn't have our names on them - unless yours was somehow speshul? ;)

You could dye your hair to match the colour of your forum screen tag. For example, mods can dye theirs red, AFA members green, and ordinary members blue, and residents of fantasy island orange. Might make it easier for you lot. :)

I'm arriving on Thursday 12th (driving down from Brisbane via Tuncurry, Central Coast, Sydney and Canberra) and will be leaving on Wednesday 18th and heading out to Sth Aus for some work, then back to Brisbane. So I'm making a trip of it. :)

A simple means by which to identify forumites would be an excellent idea. Maybe not name-tags, but can anyone think of something simple we can do?
Maybe if someone just got a roll of those sticky gold stars to put on our passes that would do.

Most hotels will secure your luggage for you, and let you use the showers etc. [Except in a London hotel, who looked at moi as if I was crazy. Don't hotel staff know what it is like to spend 18 straight on a plane??]

Not counting on early check-in. Last time I stayed at the same hotel they wanted to charge me a whole extra night for it. We'll see how I go this time.
Lunch sounds good though! Thanks for the link :)

I have an early arrival in Melbourne and I'll be dumping my bags at the hotel. I'll also ask about the possibility of an earlier-than-2pm check-in; can't hurt.

YHA has lockers for a dollar/day, and in some of them you can gain access to some of the toilets/showers without a key/keycard. So unless you want a snooze, there is no point to an early check in and forking out extra cash.

I had a redeye from London to Dubai, and all I could think of was sleep. When I got to the hotel room I lay on the bed for about 10 minutes, realising that I wanted exercise more than sleep. [ I never sleep on a plane, no matter how long, I doze but generally wake up within 10 minutes or less].

I have asked for an early check-in, since I will be in Melbourne on Monday morning. My plane arrives at 6 am, and I estimate that with the 30 minutes late arrival (as usual) getting luggage etc. I will be at the hotel around 9 am. I will definitely pay if they want to charge me an extra night. 30 hours of airports and planes...

Lotsa exercise for you before you step on the plane, DC. Also, take some low dose aspirin [after clearing it with your doctor, to avoid Deep Vein Thrombosis]. Make sure you tense and stretch muscles at least every hour on the plane, and walk around as much as you can when there is a refueling stop. Have another aspirin after you land, then another good walk, as soon as you have checked in. Then a sleep.

I'm arriving an hour earlier because the airline "forgot" about the clocks going back!

They changed the flight schedule leaving from Port Macquarie which means a later flight from Sydney. I called them to express my extreme displeasure at arriving 2 hours later then expected, they did offer to get us on a flight on the Thursday night instead but I don't finish work in time :(
It's not really that much of a drama, I am just a bit of a control freak and don't like the plan being changed without my express permission!
I will drown my sorrows in Krispy Kreme between flights on Friday lol

Welcome to Melbourne! Apologies for the crappy weather - it's been one of those random arctic blasts Melbourne is known for
Have you been to the Art Gallery? It's on St Kilda Road, it's free, and it's awesome!
