View Full Version : The Official "What To Wear To Gala Dinner" Thread
Podblack

Since I think the other one keeps getting lost and the qu has been asked a few times by several people.
Dress standards suggested from last year (by the ever-classy Lee):
"There is no dress code for the dinner. We have said neat casual and upwards." (http://www.atheistfoundation.org.au/forums/showpost.php?p=57558&postcount=83)
What have people worn in the past/plan in the future?
Little black dresses like this (http://www.atheistfoundation.org.au/forums/showthread.php?p=56779#post56779) and this (http://www.atheistfoundation.org.au/forums/showpost.php?p=262638&postcount=144).
A nice casual suit (http://www.flickr.com/photos/podblack/4459224049/), a jacket over a shirt with jeans (men) or a smart evening top with pants (women). (http://www.flickr.com/photos/podblack/4460220254/)
PZ Myers wore something similar to this, I recall - an appropriate logo shirt, jeans and a jacket on top. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/reuvenim/4426093513/)
Where to get changed? If you're too far from where you're staying, there's a cloakroom at the venue (http://www.atheistconvention.org.au/faq/): "located opposite the Box Office inside the front entrance to the Melbourne Convention Centre".
There's the casino nearby, which has coffee /cafe places within; the nearby Hilton has a cafe and there's a cafe 'strip' nearby along the river front if you're after a break before attending the event. Otherwise there should be plenty of people hanging about the venue before the dinner to chat to.
Any other suggestions?

Nice work Podblack! I'll be suiting up, haven't decided on a tie yet, but I love a good chance to dress up. I always find as a guy I don't want to be the only one wearing a suit, so if there are any others in that boat, you won't be! :D. Not sure what Ms. Dilby will be wearing, but no doubt if she has picked something it will change 6 times before April. :p

Annie, any good places for us ladies* who have boobs? Boobs aren't big here (no pun intended) and sizes are small, medium and large - if you're a UK size 12, you're not going to fit in a 'large'! :p

Things I remember - the venue itself? Wonderfully air-conditioned. Possibly a bit too much, but that's what happens when you have masses (MASSES!) of people in one venue, they have to keep the place cool to balance it out.
I had long sleeves on throughout the entire thing and had a jacket; at one point when I caught up with friends over the biscuit trays during the morning tea break (highly recommended) and one of them was visibly shivering. She had on a very nice long dress and over-the-knee socks and boots. I lent her my jacket for the rest of the day and she brought a jumper for the Sunday. Everything people have said about layers is right - "As according to what is written in the Book of Mormon as the true word of the Lord Jesus Christ"! :D

I'm a Melbourne girl born and bred and I can't answer your question!
So yes, pack for a bit of everything because you never know with Melbourne. Could be stinking hot, could be freezing and raining, could be perfect. Could be all of those things over 24 hours!

I don't know about the weather as Melbourne is very temperamental but I wear dresses all year long... paired with tights in winter... early April I'd say as long as you bring jacket and wear shoes you should be fine with dresses...

Yes, I remember well the dash from the convention centre back to the Holiday Inn on Spencer St in the time between finish and awards dinner at a stamping convention (yeah, I know :o) last May. Afterwards we realised we should have crashed the friends who had a posh room at the Crown Casino - their bathroom was practically bigger than our entire room, with a TV poised for viewing in the tub and a walk in robe area! And because they had a corporate rate from a bean-counting partner, their room actually cost them LESS than ours

On a side note, someone just sent me this link to what sounds like an Irish guy in Berlin doing a start up making "Atheist Shoes". Here's a link
"Ich Bin Atheist" (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1497254033/atheist-shoes?play=1&ref=search) I quite like! Thinking about the level of sponsorship I can justify... How cool would it be for lots of these to show up at GAC, leaving your marks all over on damp Melbourne footpaths :D
He has a kitteh! And he makes shoes! Atheist shoes!

Yeah, thought it would be a long shot. I would think though, that it would be worth asking if you could get an express pair, since you want to show them off at the GAC? Although, perhaps the prospect of making another xxxx pairs might scare him into declining!
Had a thought for a convenient and portable method of floor stamping (see, these slightly odd hobbies have their uses). Get yourself an ink pad, I would recommend either Memento or Stazon, lots of colours to choose from, (pretty sure even hot pink), swipe over sole, walk. Repeat when image fades. Stazon dries faster and would require more frequent reapplication, but they are both permanent inks. If you want a temporary effect, a pigment ink like Adirondack would be perfect. Slip inkpad into pocket, whistle as you nonchalantly stroll away;)
I think thongs/jandals/flip flops would be brilliant, although the leather enclosed shoes have science teacher written all over them.

I have so NOT read this thread if I turn up on a Saturday morning for the GAC and discover merry little "Ich Bin Ein Atheist!" pattered all over the nice clean floor of the venue and one muttering cleaner mopping them up.

He was originally saying delivery by 1st May, but now thinks it could be by Easter! I have commented that it would be great if I had them before the GAC.

He's now not so confident. :(
Hi Julian, great news, preferences noted & thank you! My dreams of delivering by Easter look to be a little too optimistic now and I think mid-April might be also, but I'll try my best as it would be lovely to have you walking around in the shoes at the convention.

I've got a very nice 20s style dress (and possibly a little flapper's cap, will see if I can put my hair underneath it first) - hardly the costume of a ringleader!
Actually I do have this coat (http://www.wheelsanddollbaby.com/Products/JACKETS%20AND%20TRENCHES/JACKET/LE_PIRATE_GIRL_PONTI_JACKET__JT-HS11J001-BWR.aspx) for the daytime - ringleading in the day, dancing by night!

We're about to head into a gorgeous autumn weekend : Friday 28C, Saturday 25C, Sunday 21C and hovering around thereabouts until 4 April, which is about as far ahead as I can find at the moment. Of course celcius! We aren't American ;)
So at this stage it doesn't look like it will be very cold (although at this time of year the mornings and evenings can be quite cool) but bear in mind that Melbourne can be VERY changeable!
Looking forward to meeting you - all the way from Greece

Here's a link to the Elders weather page for Melbourne (http://www.eldersweather.com.au/vic/melbourne), so readers can keep track.
Please note that the beautiful city of my birth does experience some climatic variation through the course of the day. :)
Having been dehydrated, soaked in the rain, sweated in the heat, and shivered in the cold [all in the SAME day!], I have come to the conclusion that looking at Mel-BUN weather forcasts is a complete waste of time! :)
Tip, 265 day wardrobe, including wet weather gear, water for rehydration, NBC suit [for traffic] and nicely ironed skin for going the Full Monty as required is the only way to go. :-)

 Isn't that something only rich people do? Sorry, for all I know, Dancer's a billionaire but the only places I can think of that do that are very exclusive, expensive shops.
Dancer, you'll find something. Even in an hour in Melbourne you should be able to find something, honestly. Grab one of us girlies and we'll do a drive-by shopping spree - I'm thinking hit the Bourke Street Mall and something will appear :D
Meanwhile, I tried on about 5 frocks last night and got depressed about all of them. Then I came home and got out two lovely dresses from my wardrobe, both only worn once, and tried them on. Both looked pretty damned good, if I do say so myself, so I have decided that as part of austerity measures I am going to recycle a frock. I have an Imelda Marcos-like collection of shoes so that's not a problem.
I feel much better now and it's taken the stress out of finding something new to wear

So do I... Shoes are not going to be any problem for me either. Going tomorrow to get a dress, I have a certain shop here I usually get my clothes, and the owner (who knows me well, after all these years) told me there is a new collection out and there are plenty of stuff I could try. I am certain to find something.
Weather looks to be like autumn in Greece, and like what we are going to have next month. Right now temps are low, still wearing long sleeves, but it's getting better.
Can't really wait... It will be great to meet my Aussie internet friends, and lots of new people. :)

So long as you are opaque there's no reason to worry about people trying to walk through you.
If you are transparent, some form of al-foil undergarments should prove both stylish and functional. You'll even show up on radar, so ships won't be a concern either.
