View Full Version : Founding An Aussie Secular Charity

Hi everyone!

My name is Avi. I'm an atheist, a humanist and a skeptic based in Adelaide. I've always found it hard to find a worthy place to send my charitable dollars. Most of the charities out there are religious. But now I've found an explicitly humanist charity.

I recently joined the Foundation Beyond Belief - a US based charitable fund dedicated to channeling money from non-believers to secular causes. However, being US-based, it is not tax-deductible for me and it uses its money to fund US-based charities.

I've been working with them to try and found an Australian-based sister organisation under the same name and branding. I'm currently navigating the minefield of paperwork that it takes to make this happen. At the same time, I'm reaching out to Humanists, Atheists, Agnostics, Secularists, Skeptics and others of a similar mind to spread the world and drum up some support for this endeavour.

I'm wondering if any of you would be willing to help out, or can pass the word to others who might be able to. I need three things at this stage:

Help with understanding the legalities of founding a charity.
Membership in the initial incorporation.
Members to form an initial board.

In addition, once it's formed, there are two other things that we're looking for:

Partner groups. Partner groups raise funds by collecting donations from their members or conducting fund-raisers. The US branch has a bunch of free thought and humanist groups helping out.
Individual contributors. Individuals who make once-off or recurring donations to the fund. If they are also a member of a partner group, their contribution will also be counted toward that group's total contributions.

Anybody out there interested in helping to get this thing started?

I will update my blog with the latest information as it develops. (aussieseculardad.blogspot.com)

Cheers,
Avi

Hi, Aussieseculardad.

This is a message sent to all who find their way to these forums.

We like people, and we like facts too!

We're friendly but we're skeptical, and if somebody calls for proof, it's not an accusation. Only the strong ideas thrive here: we try to respect people. (We do not tolerate personal abuse.)
