View Full Version : No QLD members attending GAC2012 thread

djarm67
23rd August 2011, 06:58 AM
I notice that certain other states have a thread denoting which members are going to GAC.

Whilst I'm in QLD and I am going to GAC, I am relieved that QLD has not sunk to the level of those other states by creating a thread like that.

Are there any other QLDers (going to GAC) who are also glad that there is no "QLD members attending GAC2012" thread?

Agreed. I am going as is Annie and we would never stoop so low as the others states have done.

Yes, it didn't even cross my mind to create a thread about it. I think we are above that.

See you at the GAC!

Agreed, being a qld'er my attendance at the GAC is a wholey private matter ;), as I'm sure it will be for all the other qld'ers who add to this thead...

I was adopting a Katterquese approach. Just as there are no homosexuals in Queensland, there are clearly also no atheists.

Mrs AUSloth and I are in agreement that a standard should be maintained and hereby state that we will not be giving notice that we have booked passes, flights and accomodation to the GAC2012 from FNQld:D

Not being an Australian, I don't 'get' the interstate rivalries; however, it is interesting to see that Queensland isn't jumping on this particular bandwagon. Such humility!

I wouldn't lower the tone to contribute to such a thread either. I'd have to reveal that I have a gold pass and dinner so that wouldn't do! :D

There is no rivalry, as there is no competition. Although the other states are trying hard for some reason *shrug*

Yes, another thing that has us stand out a cut above the rest. I should know, I left Victoria to be here (and passed thru 'New South Wales', which is pretty much as it's name implies)

I am also glad, as a Queenslander attending in spirit.

Haha, just kidding. Queenslander atheists don't have souls.

Indeed Wolty! We have principles. Unlike those people in other states with those cheap, nasty, self fulfilling threads. I'm so very glad we can rise above that and not tell everyone we are going and have our gold passes, flight ticket and accommodation booked.

Hmmmphhh with associated hair flick.

I must say it's refreshing to find QLDers sticking up for themselves and acknowledging that we up here, at least, have enough manners not to brag.

I mean, if I WAS going to mention that I HAVE BOOKED ACCOMMODATION, FLIGHTS AND TICKETS (INCLUDING DINNER, MOTHERFUCKERS!!!!), I would most certainly do it quietly in a ladylike fashion in a corner somewhere private to only one or two very close friends.

I was born in Melbourne and thus, the 32 years spent living in Qld don't make me a native cane toad, and so I can safely reveal that I am going to the GAC, leaving from and returning to Brisbane without sullying the good name of QLD by lowering myself to participate in a thread about queenslanders attending the GAC.

I was in Ashburton/Mornington/Ashburton till I was 9.

Then there were the dark years - 3 years in Wagga Wagga, NSW. I really don't talk about that much.

And from 12 to 44, I've been a Queenslander (except the 5.5 years in Saudi from 26 to 32).

I just want to echo the statements of all my above qld'ers, I am so grateful that we don't have the need for any thread where I would go and try to brag that I just got my ticket, and am awaiting approval from my better half for 2 dinner tickets as well. That would be lame.

This is a tough one, I was born in the NT and have only lived in QLD a few years. I don't identify as a QLD'er (doubt I ever will), but either way my partner has forbidden me from attending. "Why spend money on the same sh*t you talk about on those online forums?!" She says. lol

Hi GQ :) What you do is you tell her that spending three days with up to 5,000 people talking about the same shit will get it all out of your system and she won't have to hear any more about it from you til the next one. Worth a try! Cos seriously, you wouldn't want to miss it. :p

GotQuestions

I don't want to miss it, since Dawkins, Dennett, Harris and Hitchens were named as speakers I've been pushing hard to get the yes from her. I haven't tried that tact yet, but it's well on its way to be used. :) I was kind of saving it for a last ditch effort, but I might have to bring it out soon. lol

Only if you aren't not going to the GAC. This of course would allow you to un-non participate in this thread.

Welcome to this thread.

My office mate said that I couldn't post in the thread unless it was something incredibly witty. Prediction falsified. It turns out she's not psychic at all! I'm chalking this up as a win for science.

I'm certainly not posting that I'm coming down from Bris. And I'm certainly not going to the dinner (really - 'coz I'm cheap, and if I didn't do dinner in the evening with old friends I'd be burned at a stake).

I will say that I was pretty happy to track down a copy of the GAC 2010 DVD yesterday. Look forward to the full experience (if I were going which.... I'm certainly not saying I am!)

In other news I will have to reschedule my dad time for that weekend. The question of how to break it to my somewhat religious (but otherwise wonderful) ex is weighing slightly on my mind... but I won't need to worry too much about it until next year.

Now I know why Queensland is so under-represented. I had my suspicions most of the fundies live here. I'm so glad I'm not going too, so is my daughter-in-law. After all, we'd be all alone not knowing any other atheists in Queensland and I certainly wouldn't want to share a meal with a Mexican.
On another unrelated matter, does anyone know when the best time to buy a plane ticket to Melbourne is - say around April next year?

Annie
15th September 2011, 04:41 AM
The earlier the better if you want to be sure you get there when you want. Some of us here have got return flights from Freakytown which used to be called Brisbane, for less than $300. But that wouldn't interest anyone on this thread because no one here is talking about going to the GAC because we aren't braggers. We have class.
:)

Coincidentally, I am not going to Melbourne around that time next year, either. I most definitely did NOT get a very cheap (under $200) return airfare on Jetstar, about which I can't recall not posting in the Cheap Flights thread in the GAC forum.

Oh, some of us may be...it's just that we have enough class not to brag about it.

In a completely unrelated event, I'm coming to Melbourne in April for a brief 3 day vacation. I thought we might meet up again Praxis and perhaps go out to dinner ? Any suggestions for a good Saturday night venue ?

Hmmm...can't think of any offhand, no. Dinner would be lovely. I'm pretty sure I don't have anything booked in for April.

I think I may be down that way in early April (unconfirmed and non-GAC related of course). I'm usually busy Friday nights, all day saturday, Saturday nights and most of Sunday whenever we tend to go to Melbourne.

Proud to say that I a am a new AFA member and I just bought a gold ticket to the convention and dinner not to attend on behalf of Queensland also.

Still got to book flights and accomodation yet, whats everyone elses plan? Go early and try and catch up for a few ales, or just wing down after work on Friday?

You'd be welcome to join me - I'm having a little soiree with a few hundred of my closest friends at this quiet, out of the way place at Southbank. However, I suspect that the restaurant may be booked out. Let me see if I can squeeze you in. I'll have my people call your people.
