Annie Laurie Gaylor is co-president, with Dan Barker, of the Freedom From Religion Foundation (http://www.ffrf.org), the largest explicitly atheist/agnostic organization in North America with more than 16,000 members. FFRF also has brought more than 50 lawsuits to protect the constitutional principle of separation between church and state. She cofounded the original FFRF as a regional group with Anne Nicol Gaylor, her mother, as a college student in 1976. A 1980 graduate of the UW-Madison Journalism School in Wisconsin, she was an award-winning student reporter and recipient of the Ken Purdy scholarship.

After graduation, she founded, edited and published the Feminist Connection,a monthly advocacy newspaper, from 1980-1985. She joined the Foundation staff in 1985. Annie Laurie served as editor of Freethought Today, FFRF’s newspaper, from 1984 to 2009, when she became executive editor. Her book, Woe To The Women: The Bible Tells Me So, first published in 1981, is now in its 4th printing. In 1988, the Foundation published her book, Betrayal of Trust: Clergy Abuse of Children, the first book documenting widespread sexual abuse by clergy. Her 1997 anthology, Women Without Superstition: ‘No Gods, No Masters (http://www.ffrf.org/shop/books/Women-Without-Superstition-No-Gods-No-Masters/), is the first collection of the writings of historic and contemporary women freethinkers.

She is married to Dan Barker and they live in Madison, Wisconsin. Their daughter, Sabrina, a 4th generation freethinker, is a college student.

Annie Laurie has contributed a huge amount to freethought and continues to do so.

I'm really interested on her take on issues in Australia, being at the coal face as it was in the separation of church and state issue in the USA.

Man it's frustrating watching those videos, Davo. The evangelical dude, in particular, just does his own little Gish gallop, and I think she handles it really well.

Yes, I am more putting a face to the name.

The important thing to remember in these interviews/media debates above is that Annie Laurie via the FFRF already won this in court, all that the religious have left is to try and muddy the playing field and hopefully keep their adherents nodding.

Annie Laurie is not a debater, tho I agree she holds herself well in front of head banging fundamentalist bullshit, she is into direct action on these issues of equality and wins.

That's what I like about her, actually. She's a do-er.

Still some 10 months away but GAC 2012 is already an education for me as I realise how woefully inadequate my knowledge is in what people are doing.

Atheists urge fraud investigation of rapturist Harold Camping

The Freedom From Religion Foundation wants California Attorney General Kamala Harris to investigate how many innocent people may have suffered financially, emotionally and physically due to Pastor Harold Camping’s $100 million campaign predicting Armageddon on May 21.

In a May 31 letter to Harris, FFRF noted numerous calls for apologies by victims of Camping’s “Rapture” crusade and concerns for the untold numbers of people he and his organization duped.

“Our organization seeks to hold Camping accountable in a more tangible way,” said the letter from FFRF Co-Presidents Annie Laurie Gaylor (http://www.atheistconvention.org.au/annie-laurie-gaylor/) and Dan Barker. “We ask you to investigate Camping’s 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, Family Stations Inc., for fraud and deceit.”

The Freedom From Religion Foundation, based in Madison, Wis., is the nation’s largest association of freethinkers (atheists, agnostics), and has been working since 1978 to keep religion and government separate.

That's faith alright, if god doesn't live up to his word you can count on the lawyers to clean up after.

A "gullible people" class action.

In that first clip it would have been cool if she had suggested there should be a law proclaiming a day of disbelief, urging all Americans to not believe in any God and to refrain from the superstition of prayer.

Actually, DD, that's a fucking brilliant idea. It would put the shoe on the other foot a bit if it were couched in those terms, wouldn't it? :D

Indeed. I think I might suggest it to Dan Barker and see if he can find a way to run with it.
