Going through the angst of choosing a baby name for our first baby, a boy, and finding it next to impossible to find one that doesn't have some biblical reference!
Anyone know of any lists of scientific inspired baby names or something? :D

Suggestions invited!, but must be usual, have .com domain name availability, and match Jones :p

Thanks.
Dave.

Ok, but probably too common.
Given the last name is Jones, I'm fighting tooth and nail for Indiana as the middle name!

Look for some Celtic names, they aren't biblical.

Or you could go with Rupert. :)

Gotcha...although, wasn't Indiana what they named the dog? ;)

yw. Actually, may not be Greek, but I like it too! Not on the list at that baby-name website, so very unique.

ps if you do name your boy Sagan, i expect an invite to the christening ;)

A scientist I know named his son 'Darwin'. My son's called Timothy, which in Greek means 'Honoured by God'. He's always called Tim or Timbo - which is just the 'honoured' bit. If I had been an atheist when I had him, I might have chosen a different name, but I still like it, despite the Goddy bit on the end.

Here are some more ideas: http://daddytypes.com/2004/09/28/infidel_andor_atheist_baby_names.php

I chose my son's name because it had associations with my brother, I loved the sound of it (had not heard it before, back in 1988) and it's a fairly common name in Ireland.

The fact it's got a saint attached to it (a very obscure one no one's ever heard of, sort of the Salieri saint to Patrick's Mozart, if you like), didn't bother me at all.

In fact, if you find a name you like, who gives a crap if it has religious origins? It's a name, not a history.

Good luck with it. Whatever you choose, you will have to say it for a long time, and be prepared, no matter how much you love the name you ultimately choose, there will come a day when the kid will point his or her finger and demand 'why did you give me such a crappy name? I'd much rather be called [.....]'. I've already had it from my son (who now seems to have settled down to his name) and I also did it myself - to this day I very rarely call myself by my given name (speaking of great bogan names...)

PS: I would never saddle a child with Indiana, for several reasons, but probably mainly because that's what Uber-Bogan Warwick Capper saddled his poor kid with. Just sayin' :D

Try looking for names from Greeks and Romans, that have morphed into names still in use today. eg. Julia, Helen.

While they may have been used subsequently by religion - I'm not sure if there is a Saint Helen or Saint Julia - you are pretty safe if the name originated pre-Christianity, and isn't used in the old testament.

Sorry, but I don't know of a list on the internet.

Yes, it's not a deal breaker.
The current front running name has a biblical origin depending on which meaning you look at (the alternate meanings are good), and really I don't care because it's a nice name.
Just looking for options...

There are a lot but the fall into the last name as a first name type of thing. But with Jones as a last name it could just work. Anyway here are a few Darwin, Atilla, Linkon, Lennon, Alexander, Griffin.

Not really a name suggestion, but more an attitude.

Strictly speaking, I have a biblical name, but I wasn't named after anyone in the bible. I was named after one of my father's maternal uncles. He was killed during a bombing attack on the ship (HMS Puckeridge) he was serving on in 1941.

While there are plenty of names out there that do have the biblical connection, naming a child after someone in your own family is a perfectly good way to name a child, regardless of the original origin.

Don't be too concerned with the roots of the name for example Aerial or Azrael are for me great names.

Rohan: It is of Irish and Sanskrit origin, and the meaning of Rohan is "red-haired, red" (Irish); "ascending" (Sanskrit).

"King, I cannot be, and Prince, I would not deign to be, for I am Rohan."
- Armand Gaston Maximilien de Rohan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armand_Gaston_Maximilien_de_Rohan)

Okay, so he was a member of the clergy, but he was also a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acad%C3%A9mie_des_inscriptions_et_belles-lettres).

Also, it has that whole Lord of the Rings thing going for it.

Jesus used to be a really popular name 2,000 yrs ago, too. So much, there were probably several stories about several of them collated into a book a few decades alter

Sagan was front runner on my short list when we had to race to the hospital 3 weeks early and had to pick a name.

We had such a difficult time choosing non religious names for our boys.

In the end we failed, we thought Emile and Remy were ok but found obscure saints of those names later.

Then to add insult to injury that bloody pixar movie named the rats Emile and Remy!!!!!

At least we won on the middle names. Pierce for Emile and Lance for Remy, in honour of the hundreds of fertility injections i needed to father them. lol

good luck:D

I'm actually a big fan of Biblical names - not for their religious significance, but just because I'm old-fashioned when it comes to names. It's my own quirk, but I really grit my teeth when I see a DOCS-Notifiable name on the name-tag of some kid working in Safeway or Baker's Delight.

"Mykayla" was one that had my eyes popping the other day. Seriously, WTF is wrong with "Michaela"? I'm being extremely judgemental, but that sort of thing says to me that the parents can't spell.

We wanted to name our son "Luke", because we liked the name and the sound of it. Unfortunately, we are also huge Star Wars fans and we just knew that everyone would assume we'd named him after Luke Skywalker :).

In the end, we went with "Simon". It's simple, time-tested and relatively easy on the ears. I guess we could have changed it to "Symyn", but that just would have sent my blood pressure too high! :)

It is possible to use a name associated with religion without having the religious go ga-ga over your theistic leanings. Applicable to boy or girl, may I propose (Saint) Sexburger?
